Skyrim Alchemy Guide -- The Potions Of The Elder Scrolls 5

Alchemy in Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim can be daunting. The potions, poisons and ingredients of Skyrim are just as numerous as everything else in the game, so there are endless powders, plants and other items littered throughout the huge game world. Each ingredient has four effects, making for a nearly infinite number of possible combinations. You can mix up potions randomly at the game's many alchemy stations, but you'll end up with a lot of useless mixtures through trial and error. The path to creating useful draughts that restore health or bring other effects takes know-how and patience. To save you some headache, we've created this lovely Alchemy Guide for Skyrim.

The basic rule: Potions and poisons are created by combining items that share a common effect. Combine two ingredients that boost health, and you've got a health boosting potion. Simple... except that you can't tell immediatly what effect an ingredient has.

Luckily, the first effect of any ingredient can be discovered by simply eating the item, at your own risk of course. After that, you'll unlock ingredient effects through creating successful potions or poisons, or unlocking alchemical perks through the game's skill tree.

Below you'll find a list (in alphabetical order) of the effects you can replicate via potions, and ingredients that offer those properties. But before we list them we think we should warn you, G4 does not condone sneaking into an alchemy store and stealing these ingredients, even though it would be way easier than actually looking for them.

    This trick requires some time to set up, but once it is done, you can get as much gold as desired. It requires the following:

    1. Fortify Alchemy Enchantment
    2. Helmet, gloves/bracers, two rings, and a necklace
    3. Five Grand Soul Gems filled with Grand Souls. Grand Souls can be taken from Mammoths or bought.
    4. The ingredients for Fortify Restoration potions: Abecean Longfins, Cyrodilic Spadetails, and Salt Piles. The fish can be obtained easily by swimming around Goldenglow Estate near Riften. Collect as many of these as you can, at least ten to fifteen of each ingredient.
    5. Ingredients for a Fortify Enchanting potion: Snowberries, Spriggan Sap, Hagraven Claw, and Blue Butterfly Wing.

    Start by enchanting your helmet, gloves, one of the rings, and the necklace with Fortify Alchemy using the Grand Soul Gems. It works best if your Enchanting is at 100 with five perks in Enchanter. Equip the newly fortified equipment. Go to an alchemy lab, and create a potion of Fortify Restoration. Exit and drink the potion. Without exiting the menu, go to "Apparel", unequip, and re-equip the gear. Then, create another Fortify Restoration potion. Drink it, unequip, and re-equip the gear until you can craft very strong Fortify Restorations (in the millions of percent). If you go too high, the potions will start getting negative numbers. Do not drink those or the game will glitch. When you are satisfied with the strength of your potions, drink one, then craft a Fortify Enchanting potion. Go to an Arcane Enchanter, drink your Fortify Enchanting potion, and enchant the remaining ring with Fortify Alchemy. This negates the need to repeat this process. Then, go to any apothecary, and buy a Giants Toe and some Wheat. While wearing your ring, craft a potion using these two ingredients. You should get a massive increase in Alchemy. It will be worth hundreds of thousands of Septim. No merchant will have that much money, but sell it to them for whatever they can pay, and your Speech will rise to 100. If it does not raise your Speech skill to 100, make another potion, and repeat. After your Speech is leveled, add perks until you get to the "Invest" perk. Go to the Riverwood trader, and invest in him. Go outside, and wait 48 hours. Return, and he will have 10,000 Septim. Sell him a potion to get all his gold. Go outside, and wait another 48 hours. Return, and sell him a potion to get all his gold. Repeat this as many times as desired. It is possible to get over 100,000 Septim in ten minutes in exchange for the cost of making the potions.

    this guide is leeched but thought it would help you guys out, i was making potions worth 50000-90000 and selling each to riverwood trader for 11.5k each ;)

    ===iPhone/iPad Alchemy App===

    * [http://itunes.apple.com/us/ap p/skyrim-alchemist/id484305110 ?ls=1&mt=8 Skyrim Alchemist for iPhone or iPad]

    This iPhone/iPad app does much of what the online tools offer (for a buck). It's great for people who don't want to alt-tab away from the game, or for console gamers who may not have a computer near by. Another great thing about this app is that it's always being improved: new features have been added three times already. Well worth the one dollar admission for apple device owners.

    Here's an Alchemy guide from the skyrim Wiki http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyri m:Alchemy_Effects Although the G4 list is correct for the most part, Fortify Two-handed and Invisibilty are not in this list and Fortify Light Armor ingredients are incorrect (Fortify Heavy Armor Ingredients are there instead).

    So what is the fastest way to go from 20 to 50 in alchemy? Just roll with simple combinations till you get higher level, or start off with heavy pots?

    One thing I just realized this weekend is to get the most skill in alchemy you have to make the most expensive potions possible. At skill 50 in alchemy if you make a potion worth 1000 septims it gets you like half way to skill 51. Whereas one worth like 50 septims is only a tiny bit towards your next skill point.

    I think alchemy is the best crafting professions because with the right perks and equipment you can easily make plenty of potions worth 250-500 septims or more each, up to 1100 septims each that i have seen, that only weigh 0.5 encumbrance. I think turning 2 ingredients worth very little into something worth hundreds of times more is the best way to make cash and you can carry tons of the expensive potions. The key to this is enchanting clothing with the fortify alchemy enchantment as well as having the alchemy perks. You can end up turning 500 gold worth of ingredients into 20,000 worth of potions, that's a good return. This is also good if you rely on potions during combat, like me, and want the best potions possible, but I always have a hard time using a potion worth 500 or more because I could be selling that.
