Skyrim Includes Oblivion And Morrowind Landmasses

Skyrim Includes Oblivion And Morrowind Landmasses

Well this is really neat. As you've probably heard, Skyrim is a massive game. It's even bigger than you think though. A PC player, after discovering a gate-like structure in the southeastern portion of the map, turned on a "no clip" mode to explore beyond the Bethesda-set boundaries. This led to a surprising (and totally awesome) discovery.

It turns out that Morrowind and Cyrodiil, the environments featured in the two previous Elder Scrolls games, are built into Skyrim. There's not much to be found other than low-resolution landscapes, but Bethesda put in enough detail for key features like Morrowind's Red Mountain and Cyrodiil's White Gold Tower to be visible.

This raises some intriguing possibilities. It's unlikely that these landmasses exist solely for the purpose of making Skyrim feel like it's part of a larger world. There are regions, particularly Cyrodiil, recreated with a fair amount of detail that would never be visible from Skyrim's highest peaks.

The player who discovered the content puts forth two seemingly reasonable possibilities on Tumblr (via Destructoid). One: Bethesda used the placeholder environments as a reference point for its modding commuity to work from. Two: these temp regions are placeholders for future DLC.

    I personally joined the emperial legion, but if the stormcloaks were to win the civil war I could see Elves starting up a cause. Marrowind and Skyrim would go at it, and with the weakening imperial presence its every race for themselves!! Lord of the Rings epicness!!

    .....Or both possibilities are correct. Maybe they at first used reason number one and then when figuring out DLC content, decided to use that as a jumping off point?

    I'm hoping we get stuff that leads into other regions. If we aren't getting Shivering Isles type DLC, going to a Deadric Prince's realm then why not Morrowind and Cyrodiil?

    That's pretty sick. I mean I did find those gates by accident while I was roaming around where I shouldn't have been XD. I hope it's future DLC.

    Not to piss in anyones Honningbrew Mead, but I have a feeling that the inclusion of Morrowind and Cyrodill is due to the world map. But I am not losing hope that future DLC will include both Morrowind and Cyrodill !!

    This explains the post on the wiki about a easter egg that would be undeniably from the elder scrolls 4 and one from 3. If the whole land mass is included then yea i would say its undeniable

    I think they'll do both.
    PC = Modtastic
    Console = DLC

    I hope they do eventually add the ability to go to the continents of the older games. I mean Nords are cool and all, but i wanna go to Eisweyr and Black Marsh and such too, with this new pretty engine and all :P

    Lydia gets to stay at the beginning of dungeons. With her +carry weight on as much gear as I can, having a mule follow me means I rarely ever go back to town.

    Adam,

    Have you done any follow up with Bethesda and tried to get any kind of confirmation as to what they could possibly be using those builds of Morrowind and Oblivion? Speculation is fun... but this is a cool opportunity to get some good facts out of them! Keep up the good work.
