Activision Donates $3 Million To Call Of Duty Endowment On Veteran's Day

While Activision announced that they sold a mind-boggling 6.5 million copies of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 in 24 hours, the company also mentioned that they donated a generous $3 million to the Call of Duty Endowment. The CoD Endowment is a non-profit public benefit corporation founded by Bobby Kotick that seeks to provide job placement and training for veterans.

So far the Endowment has provided more than $1.5 million in grants and scholarships to veterans' organizations across the country since 2009. You can say whatever you want about Activision, but helping out veterans is always a noble thing to do.

On that note, Happy Veteran's Day!

This is raising money for veterans, which is great - but do military shooters like Call of Duty disrespect war veterans? Or do they help us to understand them?

With military shooters proving to be immensely popular for a decade now, it got me thinking is it right to be playing games based on or inspired by similar, real wars in which real people died? It s amazing fun, but is it respectful?

But then lots of people watch films and TV about war, are those any worse than games? I think that to some extent, games help you to understand the nature of war by bringing you into the soldier s boots, rather than just watching.

I have written more about it at http://generaloverflow.com/war -games . I would be interested to see what other gamers feel about this topic.

That's a relief to hear. But I must add, I haven't heard of this organization, so how may I come into contact to receive benefits? I'm currently a veteran trying to figure out what to go to school for, and in the market for a job to currently support myself in this endeavor...

Much love Activision. I am glad I supported your company and that in turn you supported the troops. Happy Veteran's day everyone.
