In the ongoing list of Xbox 720 rumors, a new one has landed on our desk predicting that the Xbox 720 release date will be sometime next holiday season. Technology reporter Paul Thurrott seems to think so, saying in the Windows Weekly video show that Microsoft's next system, codenamed "The Loop" will be out in time for the holidays next year.
"What I’m hearing is [the next Xbox is] going to come out for holidays next year, meaning that they would almost have to announce this at CES, wouldn’t they? That’s my rumor… that we’ll expect to hear something about that. They’re going the Apple route where they want this thing to integrate very tightly with Windows 8 and Windows Phone, which is a problem with the current Xbox.”
CES is the Consumer Electronics Show that's held each January in Las Vegas. Normally game companies hold their big announcements for E3, but as Microsoft may be planning to push their other products at the show it might make sense for them to reveal their new console as well.
As we learned last week, the Xbox 720 is rumored to be based on Windows 9 and ARM processing architecture. We'll just have to see if any of this comes true in January, but it's fun to speculate in the meantime.

If this really is happening, I hope it isn't some rushed knee-jerk reaction to the Wii U. It's bad enough that we have games released that feel like they're late betas, we don't need consoles to be just as rushed and just as haphazardly constructed.

While I believe that new consoles from MS and Sony are close, next year is way too close for this to be true. If this were true dev kits would be out and some 3rd party studios would be leaking info about it

I think that it is a bit too soon, at least with the release of the 360s'. i just got my Gears console this september and am not looking forward to upgrading to a new console within just a year, considering that this one should last up to three years or more (praying more.) So i say hold on for at least one more year, I mean what about all the new games coming out next year like Darksiders2!!!! will they be a cross platform for both the 360 and rumored new xbox???

waaayyy too early. both sony and microsoft need to chill and work on their existing consoles. theyve just barely tapped into the power of both and now they want to release a new console? i can understand a handheld from microsoft but a whole new home console is ridiculous right now

Yes, it is time for a new console. Even with all its reliability problems if the original Xbox hadn't launched early, the PS3 would have buried it before it even started. Sega Dreamcast got killed by launching to close to the arrival of the PS2, so everyone just waited. The 720 need to launch by Christmas 2012, with the PS4 still being 2-3 years away. Also, I can't want for better graphics, 3D, built in kinect and voice control. 32 player COD death matches are going to be epic. I just wish they would include simple removable CPU/GPU so you can just upgrade the next time. No, I don't want PC level of upgradeabilty. Just in 4 years an officially released Microsoft CPU/GPU card.

I've mixed feelings about this... in the end we all knew this was going to happen sooner or later; the debate is whether it SHOULD happen sooner or later. In hindsight, the 360 is running off a very VERY old video card architecture, an ATI one for that matter based off the R520... for reference, that's the old X1900/1950 cards back in 2005 just when the 360 was being developed. Give into consideration the processing power and onboard memory, 512MB @ 700mhz and you're consequently looking at a PC, if you had to, that's even older and obsolete to all hell.
I'm amazed developers have pushed as far as they have with the 360, especially when they have to multiplatform with PC and PS3 rigs all together, but that's where the innovation has come through... and why I have my mixed feelings; because it's only now we're seeing developers push the bleeding edge and boundaries of what either consoles can do, but more precisely, what the 360 can still achieve. In the end, it seems like the 360 could have no end with as many games that have come out, are still in development and how much longer it STILL could. Suppose the 360's life is extended even further than we imagined... then M$ will have TWO consoles competing one another? M$ will call Old Yeller on the 360 at one point, but what if that time is premature? Just end the 360, just because?
In retrospect though, the 360 is old... very old, by technological age. If you had to compare by using PC as reference for technological leaps, then the 360 (and PS3 respectably) are several generations behind... (consider this... when the PS3 came out, it was shelled in with the then GeForce 6 series, and probably still is... we've surpassed 7, 8, 9 and onto how many other more follow up models since then? Each one exists as a single generation since passed... and there have been MANY).
Considering the age of the 360, it does come at about the time of a new console to dawn over it but could it possibly be too soon? We've seen SO many changes since the 360 came out in technology overall and what will M$ have to deal with if something better comes along that they could have used while developing it? I could be talking too late and they've already developed some strong prototype ready to be fired up, or already has been, but who knows? They could hold out and implement newer technologies if they already see that the 360 is a strong suit in their favor but that's none of our decision except M$ to make... it just makes me wonder if they're really considering ALL the factors involved-- technology, the amount of innovation, versatility, resourcefulness and utilization that programs have had to deal with and overcome in the sustaining life of the 360, the capacity to extend it for as long as they possibly can...
But then, what about all that freedom that could come up from this new console? The possibilities are very interesting, almost endless to surmise but we'll just have to see. Will the 720 still use DVD's? A new format to load media from (Perhaps the return of catridges? HAHA!) Will it offer something we don't already have? Will it just be a 360 with more processing cores, an updated memory size, LARGE HDD space and the suspected full integration of M$ features? I'm skeptical but excited at the same time, worried but anxious as well. Like I said, very mixed feelings... and I'm sure I can't be the only one who feels this way.

i dont think microsoft will bring out a new xbox for a couple of years, did anyone even concider that they just got there big titles out, and they just started the xbox slim and kinect like a year ago also microsoft said With the announcement of the Xbox 360 S, Microsoft have said that they believe that the console is only mid-way through its life-cycle and will continue through 2015

I'll wait till its been out a year or more, there is a newer version that is black, and a new GTA is coming ou for the system. Then I will get the launch releases cheaper and have more than enough games to play at reduced prices.
It pay to wait and let the early adopters test things out.

It's no secret that the 360 is technologically inferior to the PS3 and the DVD drive is starting to show its age. I just hope, if true, Sony doesn't feel the pressure to follow suit. The PS3 is just hitting its stride, and the 249 price tag is a long way from the stifling 599.
I don't think the graphics jump will be as great as the previous jump, so I'm in no hurry to fork over hundreds of dollars for new hardware. All I want is a simple gaming console, without all the extra bells and whistles, and the current one I have does everything I want it too and still has the same level of amazement it did day one. 2011 is arguably the best year for software, so what's the rush? Plus, I don't have the disposable income I had 5 years ago, which I'm sure in today's economy is not a story exclusive to me.
Of course, the ball is in Microsoft's hands to prove me wrong.

I dont mind waiting they need to make sure everything is working fine before releasing the new console

So much for buying my son a 360 for christmas this year.
Sony's still investing in the ps3, I don't believe that they will rush out their next gen to compete with MS. It should prove interesting to see the innovation between the companies with a 2-4 year window between competing consoles. Who knows, maybe nintendo will step up to the bat and give gamers something they want to play again.

It's going to be wound so tightly with your Windows PC that when the xbox gets the RROD it's going to bring your PC down the crapper with it.

We need a new console, the Xbox 360 was released November 22, 2005 Thats around 6 years ago and that means its using 2003-2004 hardware and software. In this day and age computers are improving at a crazy rate so with the Xbox 360 having 2004 hardware its just not good, the game developers make these great looking games on there computers and then have to take so much time toning it down and trying to make it work with the Xbox's old software. Its sad that the Xbox is lowering the bar for games. If a new console comes out it means new hardware and software which means better graphics, more NPCs, larger sized maps, more content, less loading, BETTER LIGHTING so basically everything gets better. The only thing I wouldn't like about the new console is dishing out a crap ton of money to buy one to replace my 360 and how the console might not be too reliable after release. I still stand on the fact we need a new console because of how much things have improved, ITS TIME TO STOP LOWERING THE BAR AND TO START RAISING IT.

You would think Microsoft learn their leason by releasing the Xbox 360 too early, Many gamers got red rings on thier consoles. Instead of pushing the Xbox 720 for holiday 2012 release, they should tske thier time in building a beast of system. Gamers don't mind waiting, we loved our xbox 360. Also PS4 is not far away and if Microsoft f ups the Xbox 720, then PS4 will the all out winner.

All I know is that, I am not buying a ps4 or a xbox 720 right when they come out... I will wait until they release bundles and see which one has better games/exclusives.

I think it's too soon for a new system. The 360 is doing fine and looking like it's getting the much needed upgrades that it's been talking about for years. Plus, didn't the Kinect just come out for the 360 last year?
If it's not backwards compatible, then I kinda want to just wait for it. What's the point in bringing out a new system when you just released stuff for the current system that won't work on it. I say a 2013-mid 2014 release is better.

Let's hope it has a freaking web browser....

I just got a 360 a month ago. I would be pissed if they release a new consule in a year. But that won't happen cause of Halo 4 being on the 360 next year. Maybe in 2013 or 14, that would seem a better move.
conrad960
A little to soon in my opinion. I think the Xbox should be good for another two or so years. True the xbox is HD capable right now but think about it. You are running a 6 year old graphics card in there. 1080p was just starting to break into the market. This is why I personally think PC gaming is better. Your hardware is constantly updated so it can look better and run faster and over all help with totally immersing you in the game. It can initially be expensive but you really only need to update your hardware every 2-4 years. If Microsoft does announce the 720, I think I'm going to go back to P.C. gaming. The overall experience of P.C. gaming far surpasses anything Console gaming could ever hope to accomplish. I only switched to console because a lot of my good friends weren't P.C. gamers.
