Mists of Pandaria Overview: What You Need To Know About The New World Of Warcraft Expansion

World of Warcraft has had a pretty good run. The Blizzard MMO that launched in 2004 today still boasts more than 10 million subscribers today. Keep that in mind as you process the following news: Activision revealed during yesterday's third-quarter investor's call that the game's subscriber base has dipped by 800,000 over the past three months (via gamesindustry.biz), from 11.1 million to 10.3 million.

Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime said that the lost subscribers are largely in China, adding that the game continues to stand as "one of the most popular" in that country. He admitted that the game could stand to see a few improvements, though the upcoming Mists of Pandaria expansion is "really not intended to go out and drive new user acquisition."

WoW is certainly in no danger of disappearing, and we'll probably see those subscriptions jump back up when the new content pack is released. That said, with Star Wars: The Old Republic just weeks away, it's hard not to wonder what the potent combination of Star Wars, BioWare and MMO might do to the WoW user base in 2012.
