World Of Warcraft Subscriptions Down 800,000 In Three Months

Mists of Pandaria Overview: What You Need To Know About The New World Of Warcraft Expansion

World of Warcraft has had a pretty good run. The Blizzard MMO that launched in 2004 today still boasts more than 10 million subscribers today. Keep that in mind as you process the following news: Activision revealed during yesterday's third-quarter investor's call that the game's subscriber base has dipped by 800,000 over the past three months (via gamesindustry.biz), from 11.1 million to 10.3 million.

Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime said that the lost subscribers are largely in China, adding that the game continues to stand as "one of the most popular" in that country. He admitted that the game could stand to see a few improvements, though the upcoming Mists of Pandaria expansion is "really not intended to go out and drive new user acquisition."

WoW is certainly in no danger of disappearing, and we'll probably see those subscriptions jump back up when the new content pack is released. That said, with Star Wars: The Old Republic just weeks away, it's hard not to wonder what the potent combination of Star Wars, BioWare and MMO might do to the WoW user base in 2012.

If you've been playing past previous expansions, the game goes through something like this every xpac.. Current content is old and people are burned out temporarily..

I like Blizzard, but I've long since given up on WOW. Personally, I see WoW losing subscribers as a good thing for all fans of Blizzard: it means they'll have to release new titles more often than once a decade because they won't have the WoW subscription cow to milk dry anymore while they take the ULTRA SLOW road to develop new games--a decade is too freakin' long for games like Diablo and Starcraft.

didn't china recently get WotLK, they can't be quitting for lack of content.
maybe it's 800k farmers now that blizzard sells gold.

The novelty of Cataclysm is waning. This is to be expected--even though patch 4.3.0 isn't even out yet.

Looking at my guild a large number dropped off 3 months ago and a good portion did 6 months ago. Cata brought nothing new to the table, People talk about cookie cutter MMOs compared to Wow, but in that same regards Wow has been cookie cutting their own ideas for a few expansions now. The only thing is players are slowly walking away.

The last few months are going to hurt Wow even more, strong console releases and a couple new MMOs will give Wow more number decreases, and lets face it, I dont see players returning back, for rep grind/valor grinding gear in the same old areas when 4.3 hits.

I thought Cata was horridly better than Wrath, that being said I only played Cata for maybe 6months then all the retarded crap of re colored items from Wrath appeared and the continuous same ol same ol bull shnit. Nothing "NEW" or exciting has came out since BC. The game is boring and dry now and I had played it since beta. The graphics are bad EVERYONE looks the same, no customization at all with your characters is a real big problem. You see a lot of the same thing everywhere you look and you cannot get away from it. Hopefully they are going to do something better in the future because quit personally I will no longer be playing WoW cuz I assure you MoP is going to be a bunch of re colored crap from Wrath and Cata so no ty.

not to say itll be a WoW killer but Star Wars: The Old Republic will put HUGE dent in WoWs subscriptions. That game just keeps getting better and better which each buildof the beta thats been released. I cant wait to play the final product!

Mr Rosenberg sorry to say but previous expansions don't support that statement. Wrath released and no gain in subs, if anything it just maintained status quo. Cata released and... no gain in subs. The 500k spike was when Wrath released in china, so that wasn't due to Cataclysm.

WoW won't shut down as any mmo will have a foundation of players that will never quit. Blizzard for years seemed to just think that the brand name of "warcraft" was enough to keep players coming and they are finding out now that isn't the case.

I'm pretty sure D3 is going to eat into the subscriber base of WoW as well.
