How To Kill A Dragon In Skyrim

Skyrim

Undoubtedly one of the most exciting moments in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is when that music kicks up, guards prepare for battle and you see the shadow of a Dragon on the ground. Regardless of your level, fighting a Dragon is no laughing matter. So to help you out, I've put together a little primer on how to not train, but kill a Dragon.

Preparation

Whether you're going out hunting a known Dragon, or just expect to see one in the country side soon, the most important part of Dragon combat is preparation. You need to maximize your encumbrance points as much as possible. If you're carrying around a bunch of armor and weapons to sell, fights are going to be a more complicated affair. I suggest unloading all your excess armor and weapons at city shops every chance you get. While you're there, take the time to hit up the blacksmith to make sure you have your armor and weapons upgraded. Smelt your ore if you have any, and go to town on the forge.

Other than making sure you won't be over-encumbered, either make or buy a bunch of health, magick, stamina and resistance potions. Health and magick shouldn't really be that much of a surprise, you're going to be using a lot of magicka and Dragons can dish out a bunch of damage. The stamina potions come into play more when dealing with Dragons that have a Frost shout - ice damage in Skyrim also causes stamina damage. And once you've figured out what kind of Dragon you have on your hands, down a resistance potion attuned to that element.

As for spells and weapons, I've found that Frost spells work well for keeping them grounded a bit longer, and you'll probably want to use whatever weapon you've been using all game already. I've been using a one handed weapon and a shield, and using the shield bash to stun the Dragon lets me get in a few extra hits, but it really depends on your play style here.

The other thing to keep in mind is where you are in Skyrim - the East and North parts of the land are more mountainous and have harsher terrain, which can make fighting a lot more complicated. Take a second or two before you head into battle to make sure you know where the cliff edges are and such. The West and South especially are more barren, so you have little natural cover, but more room to run and maneuver. If you encounter a random Dragon in one of the smaller settlements around Skyrim, you got lucky. Not only do the buildings provide cover from the shouts, but the townspeople will also attack the Dragon, which will make fighting it much simpler.

One other possible preparation you can make, if you have the coin, is to hire one of the mercenaries that can be found in the larger cities' taverns. If nothing else, they'll provide a lovely distraction for the Dragon to chew on while you whack him with your sword.

Combat

Once you've actually started fighting a Dragon, you're first move should be buffing your character while the Dragon is still doing its menacing fly-over. Cast whatever Alteration spell you have to raise your armor rating, and boost your health and magick with potions if you have them. Once the beast finally hits Terra Firma, lay into it with your Frost spell. Do as much damage as you can, and when you run out of magick, switch to your weapon. Heal yourself when you get low on health, or when it's flying around. Don't be stingy with the healing either, these beasts can dish out a solid chunk of damage in one hit with their bite. Their wing attack is their weakest one, while the tail is in the middle ground and their shouts do plenty too.

Your best weapon against any Dragon is your voice - learn and use the Dragon Shouts in the World. The Shout that the main quest puts into your lap, Unrelenting Force, works great as a stun, with a small amount of damage, but your best bet is the Marked For Death Shout. In order to get the first word, seek out the Dark Brotherhood as fast as you feel comfortable doing. This Shout causes armor and health damage, which makes your job a whole lot easier. Of course, in order to unlock Marked for Death, you need to kill a Dragon first to gain its soul. Again, don't be stingy with the Shouts or Souls - unlock whichever Shouts you feel like you need as soon as you get a soul, and since there really isn't any limit to the number of Shouts you can do, other than the cooldown period, just keep using them on the Dragon.

Keep hitting the Dragon when it's on the ground with your Shouts, spells and weapon and healing when it's flying around and you should be able to beat the beast with relative ease. Just don't underestimate how much damage they can do -  in a short amount of time too. When it falls, you absorb it's soul, and have a lovely skeleton in front of you - Dragon Bones will fetch a nice price in markets, and the Scales can be used to make armor with a Smithing skill of 100, plus Dragons usually have a good amount of gold on them.

Follow these tips and you'll be the Dragonslayer in no time at all.

Are you all kidding me? I kill these things for fun! A certain shout, a nice bow of blizzard or shock, plenty of arrows, and BOOM. dead dragons. I've already killed my twentieth one and it's no big deal. I seriously have no idea as to why most people here are having one hell of a time with these guys...

Of course, it probably helps that I'm already level 25 and have around 12 shouts, and three of those are maxed out. People! Go play the main story! It helps!

good advice... train as much as you can through your companions... when you do, just take back the gold you spent, and repeat... helps to level up your skills quickly... and yes, SMITHING IS VERY IMPORTANT!! Make as many iron daggers as you can, and sell them back to increase your speech skill...

I guess being an excellent archer kinda simplifies dragon battles. That and being a great Conjurer, Dragon pays me no attention while I get active with that frost arrow swag and my attronachs get active with that fire swag and get all the attention.

Dragons seem to me to be alot easier than some other foes. It's attacks rarely hit and there's so much time in between for a player to damage.

I probably have versed at least 15 dragons over the weekend, some were the same dragon that just respawned in the same area, but still I killed at least 15 dragons since I got the game. Dragons aren't very hard if you know what style you are good with, like I am good with heavy armor and duel wield swords or two handed, and I kill dragons within 30 seconds of them landing if they stay on the ground. What I'm saying is find your style you are best with, then you will slay dragons like a real Dovahkiin. Also, be sure you have some type of storage if you want to make Dragonbone or Dragonscale armor, the bones and scales weigh a ton.

the dragons seems to easy to kill to me I'm on 5th or 6th now. I've died twice but its cause i made the mistake and not paying attention to my health. The best way I've found to kill dragons is to have companion helping you out. what happens usually the dragon focuses on your companion which than allows you to do your whooping on it i think other enemies like the giants seems harder to kill than the dragons

Yeah, the dragon priests are a lot harder than the actual dragon. I fought one for about half an hour. It had really powerful spells that it didn't run out of because they were from a staff. I think I got lucky because it finally stopped for awhile and I rushed it. Also, somehow my summoned monsters also turned on me against this. I don't know how that one happened.

either play as a nord(resist frost) or dark elf(resist fire) since there are only fire and ice dragons. then use archery a lot so you dont have to get too close.

I got lucky with my third dragon last night. It flew overhead and started attacking just as I walked through a giant's camp! So, I let the giant take agro and just beat the crap out of the dragon for me while my mage hit it from a distance. Easy (and lucky of course).

But then I had to run like crazy from the giant of course!

I have killed two dragons. The one at Whiterun, and another, with myself and the companion Lydia, up in the mountains. Problem was the thing that popped out of the coffin AFTER I beat the dragon was harder to defeat, and eventually killed me...without having saved after I killed the dragon and got the voice rewards that were in its lair. Grrrrr......

Actually, dragons are pretty easy to defeat. My suggestion would be to do nothing but exploring before moving up to the quest at Whiterun that has you kill a dragon plaguing the western tower outside. What you should do is pretty much wait until level 12 or so and just smith A LOT. Beef up your armor and weapons if you a warrior class character. The easiest way to boost on your smithing is to buy a ton of leather and leather strips and make hide bracers over and over again, which will increase your level and your skill allowing to make items to can reach up levels above Superior.

I beat my first dragon easily by utilizing dwarven armor and just smacking its face with the shield bash to stun it and get some easy hits with the dwarven long sword. To avoid taking any damage from the walking dragon, just strafe around the dragon and constantly hit it, it wont even touch you. If it is hovering above you, use ranged spells on it.

Life got even easier when Lydia joined me. I constantly upgraded her armor and weapons. Right now she has an Epic Glass Sword and Epic Steel Plating armor which I plan to get rid of once i obtain Ebony, then i will give her my Epic Orcish Armor. Dragons are easy, the Dragon Priests are the real problem. Hope this helps! :D

I just want to add to the main post here: Have an exit strategy. If the dragon is too powerful or you just aren't prepared for a dragon fight, get out of there. Try running for heavily wooded areas, or ideally a dungeon that exits in a different location. If escaping the dragon is impossible, try running for a tower, because chances are that whatever is inside is easier to kill than the dragon. If you manage to get inside a tower, it's an ideal location to pop out and take shots at the dragon circling around you. It's a long and tedious strategy, but it's saved my life.
