Mass Effect 3

A 13-minute video of Mass Effect 3 gameplay leaked due to "human error" on Microsoft's end this past Friday. According to BioWare, ME3 content that was meant for internal beta testing was flagged incorrectly and sent to people who signed up for the beta of the Xbox Live dashboard update. While the leaked code was in a rough, unfinished state, a new story feature was one of the things that particularly caught our attention.

It's not up anymore, but the video showed various areas and characters in the game, including Commander Shepard and Captain Anderson during the Reaper invasion on Earth and another part featuring Shepard, Liara, and Garrus escorting the quirky Mordin and a Krogan.

"One feature that was present in this early build is a set of game play modes that are in development. In the beta code they are referred to as “action mode”, “story mode” and “RPG mode," said BioWare's Jesse Houston on the Mass Effect 3 forums.

"We want to stress that these features are still in the early stages of development and will receive considerable iteration and refinement. These modes are designed to give players an even finer degree of control over their game experience than ever before," said Houston. "Whether it be someone who finds the combat difficult but wants to experience the amazing story, someone who wants to focus on the action and combat game play, or fans who want the rich, story-driven RPG Mass Effect experience they’ve come to love – Mass Effect 3 will support all of these options.  We’ll have more info in the days ahead!"

I unfortunately wasn't fast enough to get to play the demo or to see the footage, but most of the ME3 community seems ecstatic with the demo. If you got to play it, what did you think?

Mass Effect 3 is coming out for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on March 6, 2012.

I really think that this isn't going to hurt the game. Those making assumptions, or panicking because they fear EA is screwing with the game mechanics should just chill out and read the article over again. It sounds perfectly reasonable for Bioware to add these modes. If you don't want to play a specific mode than don't. I for one am going all out with the RPG mode.

I haven't watched it and have read spoiler free posts in various places. Folks love the rough cut they received. I have no reason to believe that a polished version will be nothing short of amazing. Not that I really doubted it before. The ME universe is sort of the favorite child over there at Bioware. :)

There are many words I would use to describe Mordin. Quirky is not one of them.

I just think it's a load of crap. If you think the combat is too difficult: select EASY mode. If you don't want to deal with directing the dialogue, well, what the hell got you started playing ME in the 1st place??? EA really needs to keep their GD paws off of the artwork or else masterpieces like ME will turn to garbage.

It's funny how people think EA is the sole reason for those multiple game modes.

BIOWARE, IF YOU WRECK THIS, I WILL HUNT YOU DOWN. I WILL NOT HAVE THE CONCLUSION TO ONE OF MY FAVORITE SERIES THIS GENERATION GET RUINED BY A MAJOR CHANGE IN MECHANICS TO PLEASE ANOTHER CROWD. DO NOT. DO NOT. DO NOT TURN THIS INTO A STUPID MINDLESS SHOOTER. IT WAS ACTOIN ORIENTED ENOUGH IN ME2, AND DOESN'T NEED TO GO ANY FURTHER IN THAT DIRECTION... FIRST MULTIPLAYER AND NOW THIS. DON'T MESS OUR GAME UP. PLEASE!

Dear EA, if it ain't broke don't fix it. Just sayin'. As a supervisor myself I know that micromanaging is one of the worst things you can do. Let the people you hired do the jobs you hired them to do! If you can't keep your grubby little fingers out of the pot, then you deserve the end results.

Somehow I don't think EA cares about the RPG'ers though. Shooters are much more lucrative.

If you want to play straight out action game then get the many shooters out there. These new modes sucks. Though not surprise, seeing as Bioware said they want to attract the Modern Warfare crowd. If Bioware keeps nerfing the RPGs in their games, I will turn to CD Projekt RED and Bethesda for my RPG fix.

Okay, little rant here... it's freakin' RETARDED to change the gameplay mechanics after having 2 blockbuster games that sold millions of copies... the first 2 games were incredible, and that was partially due to the core gameplay mechanics... they were a perfect mix of action and RPG... why change that now?!? IDIOTS!!! i will be sooooo mad at BioWare if they change the core gameplay mechanics... it might be a buy or not decision maker for me...

From what I've read on the Neogaf forum the modes operate as follows.

RPG Mode: Just like Mass Effect 2.
Action Mode: Combat works as normal; but the game makes all the dialogue choices for you.
Story Mode: You make dialogue choices; but the combat is much easier.

Aside from that I saw a screenshot which showed more options to tweak the experience including options for setting the combat difficulty and whether your squad use their powers automatically or whether they wait for orders (as in Mass Effect 2).

    My Opinion:

Offering alternative modes to attract new audiences is definitely a better approach then forcing a dumbed down version on everyone like they did with Dragon Age 2.

From what I've seen of the Mass Effect 3 leveling system the RPG elements seem to be more in depth then they were in Mass Effect 2. That's great news as far as I'm concerned; but I can see how it might dissuade some people. So maybe this will be a good way to broaden the game's appeal without pissing off fans who like their RPGs to have a lot of depth (fans like me for example).

    Dear EA,
You bought this company because they made great games. Please let them do what they do and stay out of their way. If you want to mess with something then keep fiddling with your sports games.
    Sincerely,
    Worried consumer

I watched some of the ME3 footage posted online over the weekend. I was interested to see what ME3 was going to look like but after a short time I realized I didn't want this to ruin parts of the game for myself so I turned it off.

I watched the footage this morning and it looked really good. March can't come soon enough.

There was nothing wrong with the former difficulty modes, this just sounds like EA continuing to cater to a casual audience. I can't see anyone not playing "RPG mode", it's what the franchise is based on in the first place. ME2 was an excellent game, but I can't help but feel that ME3's development has really been intruded upon by EA's influence.
