Remember back a few years ago, when the Wii was the hit toy of the year and the joke about the Nintendo DS was that it prints money? Not so much any more. Nintendo continues to post huge losses. Nintendo posted a net loss of some 70.3 billion yen ($926 million) for the six months to September 30 2011. That's nearly a billion dollars in loss. I'm no math wizard, Nintendo revised its full-year net income down from a 20 billion yen profit to a 20 billion yen loss.
Although softer sales on its systems and software are certainly a factor in Nintendo's sagging profits, the main reason for the loss is thought to be the rising value of the yen itself, which damages profits that come from overseas.
Click the "Read More" tag for details on Nintendo's shaky financial outlook.
For the last six months, Nintendo sold 8.13 million units of 3DS software, while the combined sales for its NDS hardware line (DSL, DSi, DSi XL) were 2.58 million units. Combined software units sold for NDS handhelds hit the 28.99 million mark.
The Wii shipped 3.35 million units for the period, and 36.45 million software units were sold for the system. For the real nitty-gritty breakdown of Nintendo, check out the financial slide below:

Release Smash Bros, Paper Mario and Pikmin then - not that hard, Nintendo.

yep.... Nintendo turned to gimmicks and brought Mario and zelda down with it... imagine the possibility's of a game like zelda on a proper modern console.... i guess we will never find out unless Nintendo steps out of the world of gimmicks..

not suprising when most people already own these systems

It's hard to make your products sell if everyone already has them. As much as a billion dollars is, I don't think this is necessarily something that will cripple a company like Nintendo. Their focus on gaming for "Everyone" isn't a gimmick and from a business standpoint, makes perfect sense. Because, that's what Nintendo is; a business. Yes, the Wii did come off as the family toy with very few legitimate games, but guess what? It sold.
Nintendo is committed to the gamer which is what they are trying to show with Wii U. Gimmicky, I don't think so. Time will tell, but I think Nintendo is looking ahead and trying to provide games for all in the most immersive way possible. They are beyond sitting on your couch with a controller and a monitor. If that wasn't the way to go, then why did the other two big boys follow?

I hope this will make Nintendo wake up and smell the coffee. I'm still ashamed about buying a 3DS, even if it was on discount (I thought there were gonna be good games for it). 3D and motion sensor is just not for you Nintendo. Nobody wants to spend their time getting up and moving around to play a game... infact if we did we wouldn't even be playing a video game... we would be outside doing something else. The last time I ever picked up a wii-mote was No More Heroes 2 and that's it

I think part of the issue is lack of advertising now. When the wii first came out, there were was a big marketing push to let everyone know what it is and that they needed it. But they have been real lacking on any ads for their new games and the 3ds. If I didn't keep up with gaming news, I wouldn't have known that a new Kirby game just came out or that the new zelda was coming out soon. If they want people to buy their stuff, they need to remind them it's out there, especially when there are such big marketing campaigns for other big game competitors like MW3, BF3, Rage, Skyrim, AC:R, Batman AC, etc.

UHOH!
Where's all the Nintendo fanboys now? Welcome back to the GameCube era.
Hey Nintendo, cut your losses, drop Iwata, go third party and leave gaming to the big boys, namely Sony, Microsoft, and Apple.

this is a sad day for gamers in general.

Nintendo just WOW the super Nintendo and the N64 where the best systems they have ever mad. i own a Wii and i never play it all the games are for kids no hard core gamer unless they have tons of friends will want to play the Wii. Gamers want guns gore a good story awesome multiplayer thats rely it. that motion crap gets stupid focus on games like mario zelda things your good at. And the last hand held system that was popular was the SP so ya. rather make good games or your going to fade into the gaming hall of fame with 2 good systems. Nintendo save you self plaz.

Just like godsen002, I'm not surprised by this. Nintendo has so little focus on actually making good games for their consoles that there is so little value in any of their consoles any more. The only way they can turn things around is to focus on making games instead of making gimmicky consoles.
Godsen002
....is anyone really surprised? the 3ds and wii u are both gimmicky consoles that no one wants. WAKE UP NINTENDO. The Wii U won't sell well either. Go back to what you're best at, making games for your true fans, and not overweight soccer moms and small children.
