Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

According to entertainment industry Bible Variety, a deal for an Assassin's Creed movie is happening, and it could be actually interesting. The film rights seem to be heading to Sony pictures.

All movies based on video games are terrible, so I have no hope at all, but Ubisoft is reportedly going to keep a close eye on the movie and maintain creative control throughout the process, which, in theory, will keep it from being awful, but, again, I have no hope: Ubisoft is really good at making games, but are they really good at making movies too? That remains to be seen.

One thing that is certain: A lot of money has changed hands. There was apparently a bidding war between movie-world heavy hitters at Sony and Universal, so I'm assuming a dumptruck full of cash was driven to someone's house.

Here's is my insider-cynic predictions on three possible ways the movie will come about:

  • Sony's executives will steamroll Ubisoft's dudes, and will utterly ignore calls to maintain the integrity of the story in favor of selling many action figures and commemorative Slurpie cups at 7-11. McG will be the director. Jason Stratham will be announced as the star, but ultimately, the role will go to Jake Gylenhaal. Critical reaction will be mixed. The effects will be lauded. The story will not be lauded. The film will turn a modest profit, mainly due to foreign sales. Gamers will hate it.

Or...

  • Ubisoft's executives will hold firm and insist on keeping creative control. The relationship between them and Sony's execs will sour once the Sony executives realize that Ubisoft honestly takes the characters and story of a frickin' video game seriously. The budget will be scaled back. A promising unknown will be cast in the lead role. The script will go through many re-writes. Eventually, the entire project will be put on hold in favor of a new Michael Bay picture. Assassin's Creed: The Big Huge Movie will never happen, but there will be an animated comic book based on the original screenplay.

Or...

  • It will be the best movie ever!

What do you think? Which scenario is most likely?

I have renewed faith in Sony pictures because they recently have been showing more respect for their subject matter in movies. That's why I hate how they bought the rights to make a Steve Jobs movie so soon, but the way they respected The Social Network if anyone is going to make a good respectful movie, it's them. I hope the same for Assassins Creed.

lets hope for the first half of option B, and all of option C. its sad that the results are predictable. havent movie makers ever looked at this and realized what tools they are...? i know that when i make movies i wouldnt let that happen

With Assassins Creed the movie series needs to be a series...more than 1 movie. Maybe 3 or more movies.

I hope and pray for option B, but realistically, it'll probably be more like option A... Naturally, though, different folks will each say all three, and all combinations thereof...

I just hop that Ubisoft just keeps a good eye on this movie and not let this just go out of control because i have seen movies based on games and usually they never fallow what the characters its like they just rush in to it they need to give gamers what they want and get there options on what should be on the movie.

I heard this movie will have DRM. You get to watch the first half hour, but after that you have to enter a code at 20-minute intervals to continue watching.

Can anybody tell me what is going on with this site? When I try to read a reply to a post I'm immediately sent to the top of the page. Their are blank spaces where things should be and it took me half a dozen tries to write this post. Do I need an update or is G4 having major issues?

Sorry that I'm not posting about the story guys. This problem has been going on for at least two days now.

Think of it more like this, if Ubisoft can write scripts for 3 pretty amazing games, I am sure they can handle a 2 hour movie. Even the first trailer for AC:Revelations was absolutely unreal and they have a pretty good grasp of what gamers want to see. For the first time I am not worried about a video game making the big transition.

Wat 2 think about all this um first let me say that I m a hardcore fan assassin creed n now learn that a movie deal is done then that mean this movie has the green light 2 go. It the same with halo n gears they have movie deals. But let see who first with a tralier. I will watch this movie if they make it I hope they will make the first ever game movie. But if it sucks they wat ever I stil going 2 work it a fan!

I feel like that if Ubisoft had control over actors and creative control, it would be a great thing for the movie. Assassins Creed already has a great story! The just need to try to find a way to fit that in atleast a 2 hrs movie! I wouldn't even be mad if it was 2 and half hour long, as long as it was doing the game justice and kept me wanting more!

Yeah that short film for Assassin's creed 2 with Ezio's dad were well done if the movie is done like that or better with ubisoft actually having the final say in how everything turns out then i have no doubt that this will be a great movie.

Assassin's Creed, Gears, and Mass Effect are all getting movies now? At least one if not all of them will be amazing...assuming they all happen. So happy right now! *melts into puddle of happiness*
