According to entertainment industry Bible Variety, a deal for an Assassin's Creed movie is happening, and it could be actually interesting. The film rights seem to be heading to Sony pictures.
All movies based on video games are terrible, so I have no hope at all, but Ubisoft is reportedly going to keep a close eye on the movie and maintain creative control throughout the process, which, in theory, will keep it from being awful, but, again, I have no hope: Ubisoft is really good at making games, but are they really good at making movies too? That remains to be seen.
One thing that is certain: A lot of money has changed hands. There was apparently a bidding war between movie-world heavy hitters at Sony and Universal, so I'm assuming a dumptruck full of cash was driven to someone's house.
Here's is my insider-cynic predictions on three possible ways the movie will come about:
- Sony's executives will steamroll Ubisoft's dudes, and will utterly ignore calls to maintain the integrity of the story in favor of selling many action figures and commemorative Slurpie cups at 7-11. McG will be the director. Jason Stratham will be announced as the star, but ultimately, the role will go to Jake Gylenhaal. Critical reaction will be mixed. The effects will be lauded. The story will not be lauded. The film will turn a modest profit, mainly due to foreign sales. Gamers will hate it.
Or...
- Ubisoft's executives will hold firm and insist on keeping creative control. The relationship between them and Sony's execs will sour once the Sony executives realize that Ubisoft honestly takes the characters and story of a frickin' video game seriously. The budget will be scaled back. A promising unknown will be cast in the lead role. The script will go through many re-writes. Eventually, the entire project will be put on hold in favor of a new Michael Bay picture. Assassin's Creed: The Big Huge Movie will never happen, but there will be an animated comic book based on the original screenplay.
Or...
- It will be the best movie ever!
What do you think? Which scenario is most likely?

well i am also a die hard assassins creed fan and would also be distraught if u were to see the game killed but looking at the bright side assassins creed lineage came out great,
imagine with ubi closely monitoring sonys actions in changes or anything shifty they normally do to change certain things i believe you would have C a fantastic movie. take comic books for instance there not games but have a depth in story line to, spider man was great still is great, batman, hulk after been redone lol , iron man even green lantern was awesome so in retrospect uni being tightly involved i seriously think we could one of the first epic game to movies remake that will rock any game that was made into a movie in the past and hopefully open the door to THE LEGEND OF ZELDA etc

Let me first say that I disagree with one statement made in the article:
There was ONE movie made from a video game that was pretty good.......Silent Hill.
All others........definitely crap.
Next, I agree with an earlier poster who said movies should NOT be made from video games. Video game stories generally don't have the depth needed to make a great movie.

Considering the game itself, it has really great potential overall to be a major hit. Its one of those games that can easily relate to 'the real world".

They should stay with games, id rather pay 60 bucks for a game that i will enjoy for weeks with a great story and throw another controler like at the end of brotherhood and wait a year for the next one. Not watch a medicore film based on a game that is great only to be one of two things: a remake to a movie from a game like prince of persia OR a medicore story with a medicore cast. but it would be halrious to see a terrible actor "pretty boy" for etzio or altiar and watch them atempt a leap of faith, have an accident and die :)

Here is something you might not know. Also Ubisoft Is going to make another Movie called Splinter Cell, Herd Of it i thought so. But To My Point. Forget Jake Gyleenhall , That f*g lost all movie awesomeness with broke back mountain , therefore wont be in a awesome movie like assassins creed.
prince of Persia was a joke it was ok,, but he is a joke, his moves and action can be used in this movie but way way better.
story line stick to the game story line ,history with sy fi the knights Templar secret organizations. that will draw in the money. Actor Dont Think Jason Sta Can move as well as as someone needed in this movie save him for splinter cell sam fisher , Get someone new, true to the story's roots, and then we will have a awesome movie, not some g*y illl watch later prince of Persia happening again.

Not every video game with a great story needs to be turned into a movie. More then often a movie adaptation will the follow the same formula for blockbuster films....
1. Big name actor to play the lead
2. Hot chick to be the co-star/love interest(because heroes always have a love interest)
3. Either a popular American veteran actor or an old British actor to play the villian
4. Some dopey young slightly funny actor with a buzz to play the comic relief/friend of the hero.
5. Big name director who feel that his resume is more important then keeping to the integrity of the story.
6. What we think is a video game adaptation is actually now a love story with action and special effects.
7. Since the game is Assassin's Creed expect a lot of Parkour and martial arts choreography.
In the end people who never played the game will think of it as a decent movie, while die hard fans of the game will look at it as a mockery to the series, and vow to never see another movie adaptation of a game again. That is until the next video game movie is announced.

When they choose a director they had better choose Jerry Bruckheumer. so far he is the only one who made a movie based on a video game ( prince of persia) and get it right.

l Mr. Jrohnson, I think it's Jason Statham, but beyond that I think this movie has 'Prince of Persia treatment written all over it..

too many of my video game movie dreams have been crushed. bioshock and halo for example :( but if ubisoft is keeping an eye on sony pictures as they make the movie and fix anything they screwed up the n it should be a decent movie. just dont let M. Night Shamylan NEAR it and all will be well lol
thisisforcommenting
I bet it will be either the 2nd or 3rd option. There is no way ubisoft could allow someone to destroy what they made. Pretty sure AC has a lot more background and it's own culture than most games that were made movies anyways
Patriculus1989
I think game companies should be given the right to pull the plug on a movie if they see the movie company isn't being cooperative.

NOOO, don't let the Bible Thumpers take this one!!! They will twist it into some weird stuff that it was never intended to be.

BEST MOVIE EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !
rifleshoot
i have no idea how in the world they are going to fit everything that happens in assassin's creed into one movie without dropping some key points that makes the games great. I have a feeling that this movie would turn out just like the "Eragon" movie..... that is to say: crap.

I'm sure that it will be option B. That's what happened to the Gears of War movie and I was really looking forward to seeing that movie.
permanent_nirvana
As long as Uwe Boll is not involved I think we are good.

I'm hoping for option B, as in it will never be made. In fact I hope that will be an option for all video game movies in that video game movies will never be made again.
There is no need for video game movies because all our modern video games play like movies anyways, so there is no need to see fully fleshed out versions of our favorite characters. Plus if you look at most stories in video games there is only a few that have really good, fleshed out stories and characters that a non-video gamer will relate to (which is usually who these movies are taylored to). Maybe back in the old days of 8 and 16-bit games when characters were sprites and voice acting wasn't around that seeing a live action version of mario bros (as horendous as it was) was exciting. Even mortal kombat (which was the best of the crop back then) is still a bad movie by modern standards but it was cool to see fleshed out versions of our favorite characters and stories that game developers couldn't pull off because of lack of technology.
Thats not the case anymore. I say director's need to stop adapting everything under sun and oh i don't know...come up with an original idea now and again....just sayin.
4SilverShadow
i expect it to turn out like option A but i am sincerely hoping for the beginning of option B and all of C!
