It's been over 5 days since we've posted any unconfirmed rumors and/or speculation on the next-generation of consoles, so this morning I've got some rumors on both the Xbox 720 (unconfirmed name) and the PlayStation 4 (unconfirmed name.) Here's the skinny:
- Develop reports that "multiple across the industry" say that a 2013 E3 reveal for the Xbox 720 is in the cards. Supposedly, the system will be shown off at E3 (hopefully without Circe du Solei), and the device will hit stores either during the holidays of 2013 or early into 2014. Until then, Microsoft will focus on the 360 and the Kinect.Supposedly, Lionhead is making a Fable launch title, and there's talk that Rare is working on a mature next-gen Xbox game.
- Again, according to Develop, preliminary work on PlayStation 4 games has begun at several internal Sony studios. Although no specific studios have been mentiones. The conventional wisdom in the industry says not to expect a new PlayStation console until at least 2014. Until then, Sony will focus on the PS3, the Vita and the PlayStation Move.
I ran this information through G4's Rumor-Tron 2000 computer and got an interesting result. The Rumortron says there's a 99.23 percent chance that both Microsoft and Sony are working on new systems to follow up the 360 and the PS3, but the Rumortron says there's only a 26 percent that the specifics mentioned in Develops stories are actually true... so make of that what you will.

Why do people always argue about whether PS is better than Xbox? Can't we all just come together, and bag on the Wii? ^.^
Also, this picture is from a movie...

As a Xbox fan, it sounds kinda eh. I say eh cause they just upgraded the 360 last year. If they wanted to make another system for the Xbox franchise, they would've made the new recent Xbox the 720.

Just to follow up on consoles vs pc. PC games like to point out how PC games look way better today even on average computers than on consoles (Average meaning 400-500 dollar computer built for gaming, not average as in most computers which are store bought and still look worse than consoles, which PC games tend to ignore).
The fact is, there are a variety of reasons why a person might not be able to afford even a "budget" gaming PC if they have to build it from the ground up. When you buy from a store, you can get financing options. When you buy parts yourself, you have no warranty for the finished product, you have no operating system, and you have no financing. I couldn't afford a computer without some of the deals at Best Buy. Many people just plain can't afford to spend more than a couple hundred on a computer. So very few people actually own expensive machines.
Those are the only people that see these much-improved graphics. For many other people using computer, the differences are very slight, if non-existent between PC and consoles. That's saying a lot since, again, console hardware is more than half a decade old.
Plus, these obvious discrepancies between PC's and consoles only began to appear in the last year or two (or three even). For awhile, the consoles ran on par with PC's (no, just because you're 5,000 dollar computer has slightly higher resolution textures for Modern Warfare a year after PS3 comes out doesn't make it anything but negligibly better) because they got more use out of inferior hardware (because of better optimization).
Thus, consoles can match PC's pretty well for a while after their release.
The blatant differences start to come about toward the end of a consoles life, and actually aren't that important because by the time it happens, new consoles are only a year or two away.
Case in point, situation now. And IDK about you, but I don't mind this. Spending 500-600 dollars on a console every 6-8 years is waaaay better than spending same amount of money every 2-3 years for a new machine. "Oh but you can just keep upgrading parts) yeah and that will run you up quite a bill over the same period of time, plus you can't keep upgrading forever without, you know, replacing every old part (and thus being left with a new computer=buying new computer).
What is the difference between a PC and a console? Nothing, they are both one and the same: a computer. The advantages of having a machine that can be universally developed for and has no fluctuation in performance, that standardizes performance, outweigh the advantages of slightly more detailed graphics.
And there are many things done on PC's which could just as well be done on consoles. Why can't we do steam on PS3 or 360? Why can't we have MMO's for them? Why can't we have internet browsing and other capabilities? The answer is that we can. And definitely on the next itiration of consoles, it will only become easier to do so. It's up to the developers to make it happen.
Oh yeah, there will come a day when we will have sufficient computing power to have completely life like games in every way. That day is probably a couple of decades off at most. When that happens, what will be the advantage of more computing capability by building a computer from the ground up, vs buying a console?

And btw, if you like what the graphics and physics are like using hardware that was barely cutting edge when it was made 5-6+ years ago, you can't even imagine what it will be like if you have hardware that is made 5-6+ years later (IE: now).
PC is not good in this respect, because PC games need to be able to run on a wide variety of machines. This means that the in game models and certain aspects of the game are kept intentionally primitive, and better graphics are achieved by having more detailed textures that get swapped out. With consoles, you have very exact specs to work with. You don't have to design for a wide variety of machines, you have just one to work with. That means that you can optimize whatever you make to run on it. Also, you can get more out of the hardware because it is devoted entirely to running the game (as opposed to computers, which also run background software, operating system, etc.).
I am fully confident the next generation of consoles will release in the next two years, and will have completely, or nearly photo realistic graphics, with massive worlds, CD's that have way more than blue ray (possibly 500GB-1TB of storage, like a many hard drives today) and also much improved online connectivity. I imagine lot's of console MMO's.
They might even have some Virtual reality stuff (like Kinect and these motion controls, but taken a few steps forward). I speak about Sony and Microsoft at least. I have no idea what shrooms Nintendo is taking, and I don't want to make predictions for them.
By the time PS5 roles around, we will have world peace and the future shall be glorious.

People forget the consoles hardware is 6+ years old now for 360 and 5+ for PS3. It's not going to be more expensive to produce better consoles in much the same way that a graphics card from 1999 would probably be worth pennies today. Technology moves fast, especially computers. The parts in the current line up of consoles are very, very obsolete, and are pretty much worthless. I don't want to see excuses from the manufacturers about them costing a lot to produce, because they don't. Not anymore. That's why PS3 is now 300 dollars. You think it costs that much to produce? Probably way less.

seriously there needs to be a monumental reason that there making a new system both systems look great and they just made slim versions not only that both systems still have bugs there just punishing there consumers now
chubi-_-
i hope they dont call it the xbox 720 that sounds dumb

Unless Microsoft and Sony deliver something amazing in their new consoles, I am planning to switch to PC for graphical power and possibly less cost, thanks to Steam having amazing deals every now and then.

Okay, you xbox and playstation people can maul at each others neck about which will be better, while I just sit at my pc and play away. Besides when the console gets pushed out of date, your going to have to buy new consoles and games, with pc you just upgrade the thing you need, be it the CPU, GPU, RAM, mobo, or whatever.

These rumors mean nothing. Remember when the next Mass Effect game was going to be a military FPS with a strong emphasis on competitive multiplayer?
