You've probably heard that the Xbox 360 version of Battlefield 3 will include an optional high-resolution texture pack installation that is intended to boost the visual fidelity of the game. This is something new for the Microsoft console, and something that DICE recommends players take advantage of if they've got a 360 hard drive.
"The thing with the 360 is that you need to be able to give consumers a game where you don't have to install it on a hard drive, because there are 360s without a hard drive," DICE's Patrick Bach told GamerZines. "So we need to give you the option of installing it, rather than just demanding it. You could call it a 'standard-def' version for the 360 if you don't have a hard-drive."
The texture pack allows the game's Frostbite engine to more easily stream the game's high-end visuals into and out of the console's memory. Bach didn't say how large the installation would be, but "sizable" seems like a safe bet. This is a new approach to take for an Xbox 360 release; Microsoft doesn't allow developers to require the use of a hard drive, but this texture pack skirts around the issue by apparently offering a less-than-complete experience (visually speaking) without the installation.
Those who take the time to install the pack can expect a significantly improved experience. "It does make a difference, yes, absolutely," Bach said. "The whole engine is based around streaming textures, streaming terrain and a lot of other content."

Xbox360 will look better than ps3. Both with full install ps3 only has 256mb framebuffer. Xbox 360 has 512. If u understand u know tbis install thing is no limitation.

Really? PS3 fanboys all over this article. Honestly, get over yourselves. This just helps the Xbox 360 version, and it has nothing to do with the PS3. I'm not saying the PS3 is bad, just that the fanboys can be stupid as hell..... just like the Xbox 360 fanboys and the PC fanboys.

Wow.. Now we need to install a texture pack on the hdd to run a game in high def? Of course Sony can fit it all on a Blu-ray... come on MS.. You have your forgotten HD-DVD format and drives, why not use that so you can fit everything on one disc??.... Of course thinking MS will pay Sony for Blu-ray technology would be absurd.. or would it?

This is a smart move, very smart move. Making the game more user friendly with all of the x360 fan base. I cannot believe there are idiots out there who are seeing this as a bad thing for the x360 and a positive for PS3 and PC.

Yes, PS3 for the win. If PC games could be trusted to NOT include malware then I could see an advantage there. But since there's a mouse for the PS3 then that version will be more than adequate.

I am confused by all of the banter between the different fans, the PS3 also has a texture install, probably the same as the 360's so this doesn't make one better then the other. Just enjoy the game, who cares what you're playing it on. It's going to be amazing on any platform.

hahaha well its a good thing ill be playing bf3 without lag on my PS3.. 360 will not be able to handle this game, the lag will be RIDICULOUS on it, like it was for split screen HALO REACH... and im not jsut a fanboy, i own both.. so take my word
