Herman Cain: The Video Game Candidate

Non-traditional presidential candidate Herman Cain has already secured TheFeed's unwavering support and endorsement* as the next president of the United States. Cain, a Republican, is the gamer's choice for the following reasons:

  • He may have taken his "9-9-9" tax proposal ideas from Sim City:

Everyone who has ever played Maxis' game know that the baseline tax rate for all three sectors of the economy is a flat 9 percent. Cain’s plan implements a 9 percent sales tax, 9 percent personal income tax and 9 percent corporate income tax. Very familiar.

While Cain's people won't cop to him stealing his flat tax idea from an old school video game, Maxis's Kip Katsarelis said: “We encourage politicians to continue to look to innovative games like SimCity for inspiration for social and economic change...While we at Maxis and Electronic Arts do not endorse any political candidates or their platforms, it’s interesting to see GOP candidate Herman Cain propose a simplified tax system like one we designed for the video game SimCity 4.”

Although Katsarelis did point out that Maxis chose its plan because Sim City is more about building cities and thwarting giant lizard attacks than being buried by overly complex financial systems.

  • He once quoted the theme song of Pokemon in a nationally televised presidential debate:

At the end of a Republican presidential debate in August, Cain said: "A poet once said, 'life can be a challenge, life can seem impossible, but it's never easy when there's so much on the line.'"

Every gamer knows this is a line from "The Power of One," the theme song for the film Pokemon: The Movie 2000. A Cain has quoted the theme song from Pokemon more than once in speeches during his presidential race.

  • Cain's business background:

While being a business guy is a big strike against a candidate in my eyes (I'd rather see a stock car driver or bellydancer president) Cain worked for Coca-Cola, Burger King and Godfather's pizza, all three of which are staples of the gamer diet.

In all seriousness, in politics, there's something called a "dog whistle," it's a way of communicating solidarity with certain groups, without other groups being aware of it. George Bush often employed language in speeches that was meaningful to religious people. Barack Obama's speeches and gestures often seem to contain subtle nods to the hip-hop community. Cain may actually be employing dog-whistles aimed at gamers. It's a little far-fetched, (or Farfetched, for you old-school Pokemon fans) but it's not impossible. There are a lot of gamers out there, and your vote counts as much as anyone's.

*We actually endorse Kodos.

G4 please leave the politics on the real news where they belong. After serving with the U.S. Army in Iraq in 2008 and seeing my fair share of blood spilled I'm done with politics. I'm tired of the arguing and the back stabbing. I use your web sight to escape this type of political garbage. Please don't get political when I just want to know if Batman is worth my money.

I like cain, he has the balls to take up for what he cares about. He also hasn't avoided an issue yet like the rest of the politicians. The 9-9-9 plan I will just have to take his word for because I don't have the numbers myself nor could I acquire the numbers required todo the math. Best thing is he promises to slash the spending.

I am poor, I am a college Student, I am a gamer, and I think the government spends too much, on food stamps, on regulations, on health, on politicians. We need to clean up our country before we spend it into oblivion.

Love the sarcasm of article and the tongue-in-cheek response of EA and Maxis. It is funny that they are poking fun of the fact he took their idea and to anyone that thinks it is a good plan, crunch the numbers and you'll quickly see that it a truly crap plan. It would allow the mega-rich to get even richer, while it appeals to the masses as fair. To bad the numbers prove it to be another trick to gain votes of the clueless.

Would be funny though second African American to be elected, wonder if guns would be purchased as much as when Smooth Barry got elected ? or how about all the extra security that was and is still needed for S.B. ?

I say let the rich have all the money it's the American dream.

Cain says that 99% of America obviously does not want to be rich or they would be.

He'll never get elected, his ideas make too much sense.

I Like Herman Cain and I think he would make a great President. I think he will bring alot to the table for this country. I think he has the balls to get stuff done , unlike the other Repubs and Dems in Congress and the Presidents office right now. Obama has done nothing but waste money and give money , mega money to groups that have helped him get into office, like the fake green job businesses out in CA. I think as gamers we should back him cause I think the 9-9-9 would draw business to the USA again and that could be Game Company to keep more shops here then other places. Losing our businesses is why the Repubs are scared to tax them more, i think they should be taxed a little more.
I dont see in the way he explained the 9-9-9 that no one wouldn't pay their fair share.

Special Interest money: Gotta catch it all!
That being said, I, on behalf of all gamers, am flattered by this pandering. And not in a bad way, either. I'm genuinely flattered. I don't know, it's nice to see a politician have an interest that isn't PC. People have voted for Republicans for stupider reasons than this. Don't blame me, I voted for Kodos!

All politics aside, games are a influential part of society right now and are growing with each new game.

As far as the Republican Primary it's going to be a hard call on who actually breaks free from the mess and pops up. Cain really is as good as any right now.

He probably did take 9-9-9 from Sim City since he obviously had no economist look at the idea. 9-9-9 would make the poor pay more and the rich pay less. Go Cain! Tell those poor people they aren't welcomed here.

I would never vote for Cain, regardless of any possible gaming nods he might have in his policy ideas and speeches. Mainly because my disdain for the republican party goes down to its fundamental level, plus his 9-9-9 plan would only raise half of what is needed for government to function, as well as double taxes on the middle class, but cut taxes on the most affluent. If 9-9-9 means I have less money to buy games, then I say hell no!

Because we need a tax plan that will only be beneficial to the upper class. If you look into the middle and lower class get screwed.

Any single-issue voter is an idiot. Period. I don't care if he's the "video game candidate."

He's still a damn republican teabag. No matter what he says about taxes his goal is still the same, to enslave the world and make them like it. Here's a video game solution for you, kill all the zombies.

First candidate to suggest the 5-star rating for criminals gets my vote. When the news reports on a 3-star criminal, I'll know that means he's not just bad, he's helicopters after you bad.

The idea of using a games tax policy in the real world can't be any worse than what is going on right now. Games are supposed to be for children anyways, right? So we just give the children in D.C. the tools to actually get something done for a change.
