It's rough out there for Beyond Good & Evil fans. After hints, rumors and even confirmation of an in-development sequel, the decision was ultimately made to wait for the next generation of consoles before releasing it. Why? Ubisoft's Michel Ancel had an answer in a recent interview with GamesRadar.
Citing "technical issues" on the sequel, Ancel points back to the early development days on the first game and the team's goals for it versus the vision that was realized in the finished product.
"The first Beyond Good & Evil, when I sent the technical document to Sony, it was the time of the Emotion Engine on the PlayStation 2. We had the feeling that we could do whatever we wanted," he explained. "We sent them the document, it was about planets, going from planet to planet, towns to towns and all these things. But in the end, what we were really about to do was far less than what we wanted."
"And of course, the scope of Beyond Good & Evil is large – you’ve got the city, the ocean, the moon and the space ship," he continued.
"But the space ship was designed to go from planet to planet, and it was frustrating to have those limitations. And my thing is that we really want to make the game that was previously imagined, with all this feeling of traveling. Mass Effect did a good job on that side, and I think that there are a lot of things to do to continue in that direction, with storytelling and a massive world."
So there's your explanation. Ancel wants to give you a better game. It seems so simple, and yet there are those out there who could probably take a lesson or two from that sort of attitude.

A. I think we are in for a long wait.
B. Games don't really have a great track record of looking great on a new generation of consoles when they started development on a previous gen system, do they?
I'm afraid this decision wont end as well as he thinks it will.

Goddamnit, Ubisoft. You better release a sequel to one of your most creative IP you had in a while instead of milking your more well-known franchises, you know which ones.

I want BG&E2 as much as the next guy, but I'm also glad Ancel and his team decided on a full disc release for Rayman Origins. Both IPs have a whimsical charm to them that you rarely see on the HD consoles.
I'm throwing 60 bucks their way for Rayman. Hopefully a lot of other people do too, in hopes that it will help get BG&E2 out a little quicker.

NOOOOOO!!! I want this game so bad! The first game was really fun. Oh well, I guess it will just be that much more epic when it does finally come out.

Well that dude said it himself, concerning Mass Effect. So if they could do it, his team could certainly make a more conscious effort! lol Bums.

When I was first started playing Beyond Good and Evil and looked up at the sky with my camera, I initially thought that the game would reach that point of going from planet to planet. I was a bit disappointed to find out that the ship would go only to the moon, but it's great to look forward to Beyond Good and Evil 2 having those features.

Ok so I think my point may have been overlooked.
First, I think Ubisoft should at least start developing it for PC in the mean time until the new consoles are are available for them to start developing for. That way they can get a proof of concept going as well as drumming up some interest in the game.
Secondly, and most importantly, This Generation of consoles are not limited enough to prevent them from making BGE2 almost exactly what Mr. Ancel has described in the article above. These are just excuses that he is making to justify why he hasn't already made BGE2. In my opinion, from the way he is acting and talking about BGE2, he doesn't want to make BGE2 but because he doesn't want to upset Ubisoft fans with such crappy news he is instead coming up with any excuse he can find not to make the game "yet".

The majority of the fan base exist on the consoles. Not to many people would be happy with BG&E2 was a PC exclusive. Any kind of Exclusive is becoming less appealing for Publishers these days too.

What?! That's it, I'm swearing off Xbox360/

So if he is so worried about the "limitations" of the consoles of this generation, why doesn't he make it for the PC. There shouldn't be any limitations on building something like what he described in this article that are caused by the platform if they build it on the PC.
This explanation feels more like an excuse as to why they are not actually in the development process than a legitimate reason why they can't make start developing BGE2.
