Microsoft and Epic Games are tooting some horns this morning. Gears of War 3, the trilogy-capping latest game in the third-person action series, was snatched up by more than three million fans in the week since its September 20 release.
A press release from the publisher touts the unlocked Achievement as the biggest game launch of 2011. That's technically true, but with titles like Skyrim and Arkham City still to come, not to mention Activision and EA's dueling modern warfare games, that top spot is sure to change at least once more before the dust has settled.
Microsoft also touts Gears' success as a franchise, with the first-week sales for this latest release pushing the total lifetime sales for the three games past $1 billion. Not many games share that honor. Gears is touted in the release as the first Xbox 360-exclusive franchise to earn that honor.
Before you start shouting and pointing at Halo, remember that the Bungie series started life on the original Xbox. Very clever, Microsoft. That said, Gears continues to be a juggernaut for the publisher, and my congrats go out to the Epic team. The latest release is an exceptional update to an already stellar series of games, and it's picking up some well-deserved accolades.
