Shocking moments are one of my favorite parts about playing games. I love playing a story when everything gets turned upside down on me. Whether it's gut-wrenching emotional moment like in Final Fantasy VII or a truly evocative set-piece like in Call of Duty 4, shocking moments make the games much more engaging and ultimately fun. The Gears 2 moment with Dom and Maria could have been really "gut-wrenching" had it not been so horribly written and (voice)acted. The Gears series has never been known for great storytelling and this was definitely one of the biggest presentation examples of it. Something that could have caused you to go all Niagara Falls, but instead you unintentionally laugh during the scene because it is done so poorly. And believe it or not, but I am a big Gears fan. It is just the dialogue and story that fail to hit the mark.

The Shock and Awe final scene in COD4 is one of the most memorable gaming sequences of all-time. Not the twist of it, but the crushing experience of crawling out of the downed chopper and looking up to the sky to see the mushroom cloud--and then you die. A moment in gaming that I will remember forever.

And no one that has played FFVII and loved it can dispute the impact that Aeris' death had.

I agree with the Gears 2 and FF7 choices, but not the Shock and Awe mission. I just felt tlike it was coming, so it never surprised me. One of my personal most shocking moments is the end of RDR. I knew it was going to happen(thanks alot, stupid friends) and I was still close to tears. Or the end(s) of GTA4. All that dirty-work and bloodshed, and Niko still ends up as nothing more than a yokel.

Shock and Awe in Call of Duty 4 is probably my favorite moments in video game history.

Can't wait for the last 4 shocking moments!
