Minecraft's Notch Challenges Bethesda To A Quake 3 Duel Over When last we heard of the conflict between Minecraft creator Notch's company Mojang and Bethesda, Notch had challenged Bethesda to a friendly game of Quake 3 to settle the matter of whether his company could call their upcoming game "Scrolls."  Apparently, Bethesda does not feel this is an adequate solution to the problem... or they're afraid they'll get owned.  The case is going to court.

According to a succinct tweet from Notch:

"The Scrolls case is going to court! Weee! :D"

Apparently, Quake 3 matches are not recognized as legally binding method of dispute resolution by the United States.

As this incredibly important case progresses, we'll keep you filled in on all the details, but ultimately, I think Bethesda has a point. If there's an indie game called "Scrolls," I'd never be able to tell it from Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim. I was reading the Dead Sea Scrolls for weeks before I realized I wasn't playing a Bethesda RPG, and I every time I use my mouse's scroll wheel anI think I'm deep in a dungeon in Tamriel.

Bethsheda is only doing this because they are Hyper-Sensitve and worried about how thier new game Skyrim is going to turn out. But they shouldn't be. While Mojang is new to the RPG franchise, Bethsheda has been doing this crap for over 20 YEARS. So I recommend Bethsheda should calm the hell down. Scrolls will never size up to Skyrim, or even Oblivion for that matter.

    Let's set the scene here.
Notch on one side, Bethesda's representative on the other.
Judge learns that Bethesda is suing Notch for a game named "Scrolls" because they consider it similar to "The Elder Scrolls" series of games.

... I wouldn't be surprised if that Judge laughed his butt off and told them to just get out of his courtroom.

Seriously, you can't put any copyright on a single word. Bethesda's either just bored or desperate for money. Or jealous.

This is pretty pathetic. As far as I'm concerned a single word can't be copyrighted for titles unless its a made-up word or very specific name.

Honestly i see no problom in this what so ever Bethesda needs to calm down just a wee bit now the fact that Mojang wanted to settle this over Quake 3 online match...that was a bit stupid you cant settle changing the name of a game through quake 3! also i like minecraft....ive enjoyed playing that game it has kept me occupied for a long time now! when 1.9 comes out i will be playing that one as well but i will be playing skyrim in retrospect and in my eyes Skyrim and Minecraft or Scrolls...1.9MC as i like to call it will both be good games im sure there are some people out there who enjoy Bethesda RPG's as well as Mojangs Minecraft! i enjoy most of the games i touch...unless they are RTS those games SUCK!!!! anyways sorry for spamming the comment board with such a long boring comment you probably just wasted about 5-8 mins reading this wasteing your life reading something only about my opinion but there are those people who watch fox news and care only about opinions and not facts the world is based off opinonative details such as which game is better...should this go to court? there is no common fact of which is which its all just a matter of opinion! sorry for this boring comment once again but if you took the time to read it...Thank you!

You had to SCROLL down to see this right? Bethesda probably was just on the SCROLL for the month... Nevertheless, indie games aren't that big on the radar (or SCROLL), so I doubt this will go very far...SCROLL!
Btw, the Fantastic Four found a fearsome enemy in the Super Skrull... That was bad, I know...

don't take this out on skyrim folks, Bethesda Game Studios, makers of Skyrim, are not filing suit against Notch, Bethesda Softworks, a completely different department are the ones pursuing the lawsuit. Todd Howard and the rest of the Skyrim development team have no direct involvement.

    Scroll
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
    (Redirected from Scrolls)
A scroll is a roll of papyrus, parchment, or paper which has been written, drawn or painted upon for the purpose of transmitting information or using as a decoration.

I don't see how that is confusing at all

Meh, I hope Notch loses. This case just goes to echo how lazy and unoriginal he is. He's too lazy to provide actual full updates for his game and the entire idea for the game is ripped off of another game (infiniminer). Now he's too lazy to change the name to an upcoming game and he new full well that the word 'scrolls' for a fantasy RPG is heavily associated with TES series.

this is ridiculous, if someone walked up to me and said "are you excited for the new scrolls game?" i wouldn't have any idea what they were talking about, however if you were to say, "elder scrolls" or "skyrim" i would understand what you were asking me. Bethesda needs to realize that the word scrolls isn't any more important then the word "the" in their title.

I am really disgusted at how people are reacting and taking Mojang's side. I mean this because all Mojang has to do is change the title instead of dealing with a lawsuit. Bethesda is also being uptight for calling out "Scrolls" and trying to make a court case over the word. Honestly, I think the court case should be dropped on both sides and both companies just go their separate ways.

I would just change the name so I could save money on the stupid lawsuit

Why does everyone take Mojang's side on this? Google "scrolls release date" and see what comes up at the top. Now consider you're a billion-dollar-per-year company with millions of dollars invested in an upcoming game.

Bethesda has every right to sue another company when they go stomping into their territory. Independent or not.

And it was Notch who pulled out of the Quake 3 challenge. He realized (too late) that Bethesda bought ID software a few years ago, so Bethesda literally has access to the best Quake players in the world. Notch could find himself going up against Carmack himself. So he pulled out, not Bethesda. I don't think Bethesda ever considered the challenge serious, anyway.

I am almost certain people don't call The elder of the scrolls games by the full name. They call them Oblivion, Skyrim, Morrowind. And even it does give a hint of the name just because it is Scrolls, That is 1 damn word. If a game called War came out I am almost certain Gears of War, God of War, or Call of duty: ModernWARfare wouldn't have a problem with it. Besides Gears of War and God of War's names are similar as hell but you don't see them complaining.
