I waited on a very long line a few months ago at San Diego Comic-Con, enduring sunburn and crazed fans just for the opportunity to hear more about the planned Mass Effect movie at the Legendary Pictures panel. Very few questions were answered at the time, something that the studio is aware of and has addressed in a newly posted Q&A on its website.
The revelations are minimal, but it is now confirmed that the movie won't follow the games, instead telling "a completely new story" set in the Mass Effect universe. Commander Shepard will be the focus -- the male version -- though the only casting reveal is that Seth Green won't be taking the role of Joker, the character he voices in the game series. The studio is also "working closely" with BioWare to ensure that any story changes are acceptable to fans.

I do like the choice to do this separately, however, I wish that Seth Green would be voicing Joker, that is the only thing that disappoints me about this. I'm just psyched that we're getting a movie for this, if the Gears of War movie ends up going through as well, then the world will be a far better place.

This is a very good idea. I'm sure there will be a large camp of people saying that the movie should be as near the game as possible but we only have to look to horrible comic book, book, and tv adaptations to film to have a long history of films fans have been disappointed by.
Games like Mass Effect are as near perfect to a movie as a game is going to get....so why make a movie about the game afterwards. There are almost enough cinematics Mass Effect 2 to string together and make a movie on its own I don't need to sit through a live adaptation of it.
I am a bit worried about the visual look of this movie based on the armors and locations that will need to be presented. Obviously CGI is going to be used heavily because a real life Shephard armor just won't look as smooth or as form fitting as a CGI equivalent. Plus all the alien races.
Given the fact that the movie will be an original story leaves the main villain wide open for choices and my guess is it will be an original character created for the film. If you take out the Reapers as the main villain than what you are left with is something very close to a futuristic James Bond film with more gun fights. Think about it and the role of a Spectre. They fit perfectly in with a James Bond-esque movie theme. At least I'm guessing Shephard will still become a Spectre (which would piss off fans if he didn't) and his first mission will probably be against an original villain whose actions are leading the galaxy into a massive civil war or something like that. Its not a bad premise if the acting, visuals and overall story are done right.

I don't think that the movie should feature Commander Shepard. It should either show what happened between mass Effect 2 and 3 or it should be a prequel to the games.
