The upcoming free-to-play shooter Firefall will include pets. Pets are more common in RPGs than in shooters so it's a bit strange that they're going to be included, but a very interesting and welcome change I'd say.
"Not only can you get a pet," said Mark Kern, CEO of Red 5 Studios, "but we're thinking that there's actually an item you can buy in the store to load your gun with special ammunition so you actually shoot the other guy's pet." Kern goes on to mention that you'll be able to kill other peoples pets but they haven't figured out exactly how that will work yet.
The company hasn't actually showed off any images of the first pet, "The Merch", yet, but they plan to give us more details as part of a Crystite Challenge. "It's a way that players can do things like invite friends into the beta to earn Crystite and unlock a special pet," Kern said. The Merch is a part of Red 5's partnership with Penny Arcade. According to Kern, "The Merch is awesome because he's all about merchandising and he fits with our item-based theme."
I'm all for pets in Firefall, as long as killing them isn't too gruesome. What do you think of this addition to the FPS genre?

I'm honestly not a big fan of having pets either, but it could work out. Only time will tell. One thing I know for sure is that Firefall will continue to bring innovative ideas to the mmo industry. These are some creative guys with the passion and talent to create something amazing. Brace yourselves, because when this game hits it's going to leave a mark.

This is an awesome idea, as long as they stay out of PvP. I like the thought of legions of trolls running around with special pet-slaying ammo, slaughtering pets for fun, supporting Red5 one bullet at a time.
I hope the pets remain Firefall-themed, though. Like a tiny Merch wearing a battleframe!

I'm personally not big on pets, but it is nice to see Red5 trying new and different things in a primarily shooter based game. Bravo, and here's to hoping that the game is a success.
Also, when is AotS going to interview Mark?

Seems like a sweet move to me! As long as they stay out of PvP, I'm fine with the idea. Of course, there will be hundreds of trolls running around shooting people's pets just for fun, but if the special ammo comes via the cash shop you can rest easy knowing they're supporting Red5 by doing so.
I also hope all the pets are somewhat Firefall-themed. Like a tiny Merch wearing a battleframe.

I am all for the pets, and even more excited to be able to get ammo to destroy other pets!
Blow stuff up, blow more stuff up, feed the pet, blow stuff up..... yep! it works!

Specifically abouts pets. Will they be granting combat bonuses in any way? or even fighting on thier own?
From my own point of view i hope they don't, If i'm forced to buy ammo to despawn his pet to remove the buff so he doesn't have an edge that would be disasterous.. I'm fine if they are just companions for aesthetic value

Red5 Studios should have a contest to design your own pet, but... some rules would clearly have to be like... no copyright infringement.

I've read that they have an idea that they will also have different types of ammo, some that will let you burn them alive, or blow them up, or perhaps make them pop with confetti. The best I suggested was to make them die with a dramatic gesture. Something you might see in a poorly done shakespear play.
