At their Tokyo Game Show press conference, Sony announced the release date of the PlayStation Vita would be December 17, 2011 in Japan. (Check out our US PS Vita Launch Date Update!) The PS Vita is Sony's new handheld console that will feature innovative games with unique gameplay, wifi enabled social features, and so much more.
The handheld is going to cost 29,980 yen ($250) and when we have more information on the US and EU release date of the system, we'll be sure to let you know. In the meantime, check out our handy PlayStation Vita Guide for everything you could want to know about the Vita.

This device looks great! And about the Japan only release and push back because of supply issues. Japan is much smaller than the U.S. and Japan loves Sony and buys everything that they make so it helps to hype it up if you hear about the amazing sales numbers that WILL happen when it launches in Japan.

I imagine that just like the 3DS there is going to be a significant price drop 6 months after release because people think $250 is too much for a handheld. Though for me, I personally don't see a reason to get a Vita.

If Vita delivers console quality graphics and quality game library I may pick one up once they drop the price or release a redesign.
I see no reason to pick this up while we have all of these great Fall,winter 2011 and first quarter 2012 games to enjoy. I dont commute that often and when i do my Iphone is just fine for that 15+ minutes on a train.

Yea, won't be importing one, just because I have a mountain of games to get through, and it's only getting worse come Christmas. But once it actually releases I'll most likely Day 1 it.

i honestly think that the iphone is enough for me. i dont go outside to play games, the iphone is enough to keep me busy on long road trips.

Yeah me personally, while I would love to get one right away, I know how sony loves to rush things out before they work out most of the bugs, so I'm gona wait till 6 months to a year after the US release to get one
