Today at the company's Build conference in Anaheim, Microsoft announced that Windows 8 will ship with Xbox Live built in.
According to Xbox Live's Major Nelson, bringing Xbox LIVE to Windows 8 is "part of our vision to bring you all the entertainment you want, shared with the people you care about, made easy."
If that seems like a very general and vague description, it is. Specific details are forthcoming, but I'd guess it means that developers of PC games will be able to utilize Xbox Live functionality within their games instead of Games for Windows. We should know everything about the Windows 8 - Xbox Live marriage when the Live dashboard update hits in the next couple of months.
My question to you PC gamers out there: Do you even want integration of Live within Windows games? I could see it being a great thing for gamers who play on both the PC and the Xbox, but only if PC game-makers take to using Live within their games.

Smart - M$ is basically consolidating platform development. If you are an Indie (or garage) developer, where are you going to target your first projects? Proprietary systems like PS3 and Wii, or combined PC/Xbox?

If we don't have to pay a fee, then it sounds great. PC gamers, will be able to play with Live users. If you do have to pay, well then I'm sticking with Steam...

Games for Windows Live needs to catch up with the 360. Live on PC is still restricted to using Private Chat.

I think this would be an amazing addition to windows. The PC one pretty much already connects to Xbox live already through windows live.. My PC stuff has always shown up on my 360. Nice feature...

It would be nice if I could access my Live account on my PC, and play some of the XBLA games I used to play for the 360 (which I don't own anymore). Rare's Banjo-Kazookie ftw!
