Cobalt: A New Third-Party Indie Game Being Developed By Mojang Studios, The Creators Of Minecraft

Have you found yourself caught in the deadly grip of a Minecraft addiction yet? I succumbed a few weeks ago, when Mojang did that "two for one" sale, and I've already sunk in tens of hours and gotten involved in a collaborative world-building project. The REAL fans will be in Las Vegas on November 18 and 19 for MineCon though, and they'll be rewarded. With free, unreleased games no less.

Mojang has confirmed that the sweetest swag of all -- free games -- will be handed out to event attendees in the form of alpha access to two of the studio's upcoming games, Scrolls and Cobalt. You won't necessarily get your code there at the show, but rather "as soon as they are released."

Scrolls was recently dragged into a legal dispute leveled at Mojang and Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson by Bethesda Softworks. The Skyrim publisher claims that the title "Scrolls" infringes on the "Elder Scrolls" trademark and potentially confuses gamers in the upcoming holiday season. Little has been seen of Mojang's title, but we do know that it's a chess-style board game that uses cards.

Cobalt is a different beast entirely, starting with the fact that it wasn't actually developed by Mojang. This will be the first game released with Mojang in the role of third-party publisher. Cobalt is an action-platformer developed by Oxeye Game Studio. It's got a strong sense of style and some great music based on what we saw in the game's launch trailer.
