Dead Island

While the publisher of Dead Island has got to be thrilled with the attention (and sales) the launch of their game has created, Dead Island's first week on earth hasn't gone especially smoothly. First, there's the fact that the original version of the game put out on Steam was apparently the developer version, allowing gamers to fly anywhere on the map. Then, this: An enterprising gamer on the Steam forums took a look at the game's code, and discovered a disturbing phrase embedded within:

Notice the one in the middle? Apparently Purna's ability to deal extra damage to men was once described with an off-color phrase, and there was no asterisk in the original. Purna's skill is now called "Gender Wars." As you'd probably expect, developer Techland is not happy.

"It obviously violates professional and ethical standards at Techland and should never have happened," Blazej Krakowiak, international brand manager told Eurogamer. "We're investigating this right now and we'll issue a statement later. For now, I can only express my sincerest apologies for this incident and assure you that whoever acted so irresponsibly did not represent the views and opinions of Techland."

"I'm equally sure that aside from the author of that unfortunate line of code, everyone at the office is as disturbed by this as you are," Krakowiak added.

The other skills mentioned in the Dead Island .scr file also had their names changed for the final game.
