Saints Row The Third

THQ thinks gamers are really going to like Saints Row 3, so much so that they're planning a huge gusher of DLC for the open-world crime and silliness simulator. At the Cloud Gaming USA conference, THQ CEO Brian Farrell said, "We totally change how we keep consumer engaged for a very long time... We intend to create an online digital ecosystem that keeps them interested for a year or more."

Farrell said that Saints Row 3 will be followed by around 40 weeks of DLC, but also pointed out that the box release of the game will not be sold as half-a-game at the start -- It's planned as a full game at a full-price, with DLC as added value. My question: Is this realistic?

Does the planning of DLC in the development process of a game necessarily push publishers toward releasing less "full" games?

As gaming shuffles toward the next-generation, this issue will become more and more important. It wouldn't surprise me too much if "chapter gaming," where you play the beginning for free and pay for each level thereafter, becomes the standard for the industry.

What do you think?
