G4 University wants to enroll you into the "How To Get A Job In Video Games" course, and the good news is that the enrollment fee is free. Playing video games is incredibly fun, which is probably why you're here reading this. But wouldn't you love to turn your obsession and love for pixellated playtime into a career? Now when people tell you that work isn't all fun and games, you can turn around and tell them that yes, it actually IS games. And fun as well.

Starting on Monday, September 12, we'll have an entire week's worth of information for you, and you won't have to read a single textbook. We'll have multiple features every day like "How To Be A Video Game Producer," a video look inside the making of Gears of War 3, interviews with industry notables like Ken Levine, the BioWare Doctors Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka, Pete Wanat, and a look inside the video game programs at Northeastern University, the University of Utah, The Guildhall at SMU, along with the Gnomon Workshop and MIT's GAMBIT program.

It's an entire education aimed at helping you get into the games, and we'll be covering every facet of the industry. Stay tuned next week as it all unfolds, and keep it here all week for daily new G4U content. Veni Vidi Videogame!

I'm gonna have my eyes glued. I've been trying to get into the gaming industry my whole life. I've always been told that college isn't necessary. That the sooner you're in the field, the better as far as gaming goes.

What they won't tell you: You don't HAVE to go to school for it, but at best you end up working for a fifth rate developer putting out 20 Barbie apps for the iPhone a year getting paid less than a day worker at a construction site. But maybe I'm just jaded because I went to college for four years to get an Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering degree and after I graduated no company will give me the time of day.
P.S. If anyone is hiring for those fields, I am currently available Sun-Sat 12am-11:59pm. Video game companies welcome.

I am a sound designer who graduated film school a year ago and currently work for the SSA adding closed captions on government videos. I would love to be a sound designer for games. The best way I see to do it is to make video games. I took a Java course on iTunes University. I downloaded and learned UNITY a ~free and full featured game engine. I am now in the process of learning blender a free 3d moddeling and animation software. I know I can make a game on the level of Battle Bears 1 in a few months and I only started a few months ago. So now when I look for a job in games, I have some skills in programming, moddeling, and overall game design. Not to mention I am still an expert in sound and post production for video. So what you need to do is make video games! Then get them easily published on iTunes or android market. You need to be really exellent in at least one area of making games. There is so much free information and tools out there on the internet that anyone with a little time and patients can make it happen. I also think it's a good idea to get as much information as you can like interviews with Ken Levine on G4. So thanks for this G4 and good luck to everybody.

Sounds great. I am going to try to get in to San Jose State for Computer Science and get a certificate in Computer Programming or Computer Animation. I want to get in to the field of gaming...to which company though? I really love Bioware and would love to get in to the Mass Effect world.

Sweet! I'll keep my eyes peeled for this one.

Kevin, will we be seeing something else other than working on games? Not sure if it goes in-depth, but what about game journalism? That's something I figured out that I want to do, to be honest.
