Microsoft Brings The Banhammer Down On Xbox Live Content Thieves

A new thread on Microsoft's Xbox Live Support forum explains that an unspecified numbers of users have been banned from the service following an investigation geared around rooting out Marketplace content thieves. The post goes on to state that there is "clear evidence" against those who have been banned and are now stuck with "a permanent suspension from the service."

Obviously, the identities of individual offenders are not being revealed. Microsoft isn't even saying how many wrongdoers it discovered. It looks like the company won't be hearing any excuses though. If you've been hit with the banhammer, it's because someone at Microsoft has verifiable evidence that your account is linked with illegally obtained content. That's what the company's position is, anyway.

Essentially Microsoft adopts a McCarthyism philosophy and treats those who are banned like criminals, and feel that they don't have to give any evidence to anyone because they are "100% accurate all the time". It's their word against ours.
I've been annoyed by endless users who attempt to defend Microsoft with the following: "My console hasn't been banned, I've been playing legitimately for 4 years." People have to understand that personal experience is not a truthful example of the reality for everyone else. It's like saying "I've been a law abiding citizen for years and I have no trouble with the police, that must mean they never oppress innocent citizens."

Here are some links on the issue. If you can help us out by spreading the word about these links it would help. We are trying to get a petition going here:

Doesn't this just make you X-Box 360 users just mad? Of course Micro Soft will ban X-Box live content thieves, reason why this happens is Micro Soft makes you pay every little stinking thing on X-Box live, including the free demos and just to make people pay to play online,no wonder why thieves are stealing content.Micro $oft is milking every cent out of you X-Bots,that's why I gave up on X-Box 360,honestly I pay for stuff online for map packs and character content, but stealing content off X-Box live is just wrong. This comment was out of honesty ,no a console fan boy comment.

I for one think this is all bull crap. Somehow my Xbox decided to get brought into fruition and ,of course with my luck, get my Xbox banned for NOTHING. I have never hacked, I have never modded, and I have never participated in a 'free Microsoft points' ad. I called and of course only received a 'you should receive an e-mail in 24 hours' It's been 1 week and nothing

What is this I don't even... http://www.xbox360iso.com/xbox 360-xbla-and-f137.html?f=137Oh wait its how to downland, Games on Demand, Arcades and DLC for games without the need of a J-Tag.

People stupid enough to not even read how to steal properly deserve perma-bans and then some. Those who steal should still get banned but at least give them credit for doing it right. You download the files, sign in to the downloaded profile, load the content then sign out of the profile sharing the content. if you download from the profile used to share the content clearly it will set off a red alert.

Wow Fanboyism is a real problem on this site kinda sucks.
But on topic just as a business educated guess I'm going to say it was a substantial amount of people because of the fact they didn't (yet) release the actual number. If it was small they would use that as a plus and say that with the total members of XBL that is a very small demographic.
Now to say to all you fanboys just stop it alright. Your just being juvenial and making yourself look bad. Both consoles have flaws! Get over it neither of the networks are completely safe, I do have one I feel is safer but that's not the point we all have opinions. Just because you have an opinion that doesn't mean that everyone with a different opinion is wrong. So get over yourselves this is a good thing no matter how you look at it Microsoft is trying to improve their service. Sony is doing the same post-hack. Get over yourselves.

and people who say they make a new Gamertag, ok, fine, make it, but still U need to pay for the GOLD member, so your not doing it free, and to keep changing GT is a hassle

This is why i Stay Legit, I love my XBOX so i wont be messing with it, so im glad those people were banned, i know the world aint cheap but! come on xbox gives us Deal of the Week and the occasional 33% to 60% discount on a few other games! so be patient and wait, and for those who download the accidental FREE stuff, well come on, you know MS watches there butt!, if its free, by be good an report it, its not like finding 50$ on the street, u look around, see no one, you pick it up, but xbox is WATCHING you, so why try it!

DPsx7- You can't be serious?? As if what happened over at $ony this year was no big deal??!!

Most Live account owners didn't even notice what happened. This is the first time I'm even hearing about this. Greener side over at Sony...really?? Like anyone really want to give up any financial info to them after they were totally hacked leaving anyone with an account vulnerable.

To be honest, this past year has shown us that no one is actually safe from hackers. But lets not pretend for a second that this is even comparable to what happened earlier this year with $ony, and how they handled that situation is laughable.

my little brother got banned. not just his account, but his console. for what? theft. how? for doing what major nelson said to do to get the rezerection map if u have the hardened edition which was to redownload the map pack that shipped with the game instead of going to the spotlight and downloading it free that way. now hes out 400 bucks for listening to what a microsoft official said. screw that noise.

There are other ways to get illegal content without hacking. At least without doing the hacking yourself. Microsoft obviously doesn't want to say how vulnerable they really are, but that doesn't mean all the people banned are hackers.

My friend says he's been banned in this, and he never hacked anything. What he DID do is use one of those websites that say "Free 5000 points" or "Free year of XBL". He got 3200 points using the websites a while back and is the only real thing he did that falls into "content thieves"

And another thing...if it is hacking atleast micrsoft knows who these people are and they are doing something about it. Sony didn't know who hacked their system and they didn't do anyhting to ban these people becasue they didn't have a clue who did it. So whoever comes on here and compares this to the sony hacking this doesn;t come close. sorry for posting so much lol

If they are hacking atleast my personal info wont be in the hands of hackers. Now if microsoft can stop all the modders on Halo:reach and Balck ops and get those no talent hacks banned.

People Stop it!!! This story says nothing in the realm of hacking. Your putting words in microsoft mouths...you just assume its hacking. There are other ways to get this content other than hacking. Ya it could be hackin but microsoft hasn't confirmed anything. Until they do stop assuming.
