Halo 4 won't be coming until the end of next year, but it's currently out a creative director as Ryan Payton has left his gig at 343 Industries and established a new studio, Camouflaj. Payton previously made a name for himself as an assistant producer on Metal Gear Solid 4, joining the Microsoft studio following his tenure at Kojima Productions.
"I had a great run at Microsoft," Payton told Kotaku. "I don't regret one day of it. But after a few years, there came a point where I wasn't creatively excited about the project anymore."
While Payton still has the utmost faith in the 343 team, his head just isn't in the Halo universe anymore. "The Halo I wanted to build was fundamentally different and I don't think I had built enough credibility to see such a crazy endeavor through."
Payton's Camouflaj is already up and running, with two titles said to be in development. No details on what they are or even what platform(s) they're headed to, but Payton is clearly wasting no time in moving on.

Halo should remain Halo, regardless of who is at the helm. If you want to make a different style of game with a similar style, great, but you can always start a new franchise. Epic games released Bulletstorm, which is very similar to Gears of War, but from a first-person perspective and with a focus more on over-the-top action than on story. Could they have built a game like this into Gears? Sure, but that may have alienated Gears fans, and so they did a side-project game that I thought was fairly entertaining. I don't know if leaving 343i was the right way to go, I'm sure they could've created a sci-fi, human vs. alien type of game with similarities to Halo that would've been commerically succesful without alienating anyone. This is probably more of an excuse to start a personal studio and has nothing to do with wanting to take Halo in a new direction. Creative differences may have existed but I think they're beyond just where to take Halo.

While it's sad to see this happen, it's not entirely a surprise given the circumstances. People who aren't fans of Halo say "Oh, he planned on changing it, they would not let him, so now it's going to be the same crappy Halo game." So what if it is? People who say this, more than likely, don't play Halo. Call Of Duty is the same game over, yet it breaks sales records every year. I think people also forget Frank O'Connor has the reigns. He's been with Halo franchise, and was with Bungie, for a long time. I think the game is in good hand.

im already sketched out about halo 4 ruining the franchise. this doesnt help much at all. i really hope they shock the hell out of me......

Its sad to see an experienced creative director go but I feel its better to have people pumped about a project. I'm also curious about what his vision for Halo 4 was.

"The Halo I wanted to build was fundamentally different and I don't think I had built enough credibility to see such a crazy endeavor through."
Is that your response to your childish act of quitting? a bull response, and a disgusting excuse... you have worked with halo MORE than your heir... You screwed up... and in return more and likely screwed over the future of Halo
wedotron
This is good, 343 doesn't need people who aren't interested in Halo to be working on it. I only hope they make it like the older Halo games.

I am sure this guy was great at his job, but halo has a strict story line that is mostly in the books and their are a lot of them. Because of this you can not change too much. Me and many other people were already mad about how reach overwrote some of the story from the book fall of reach which was 100 times better than the game(Personal Opinion). I am hoping that the future of the halo series will do well with 343, the only thing I would like is if they took out most of the power abilities because to me they made it feel non halo-ish, this though is my personal opinion, as I will still play Halo 4 for the story and as long as they actually make some good maps as they did in halo 1 and halo 2. Long live halo my favorite sci-fi franchise.

So basically making almost identical Halo games over and over got old.
shyguy
Good for him.
EliteBAMF
So essentially he wanted to make some crazy non-Halo game out of Halo and they wouldn't let him? Oh well, sorry to see him go but he should've seen that coming
nightsnipe
I see this as a good thing.
When I play a favorite series of mine (in this case Halo) I don't wan't a completely different game than what I have been playing, in the main series at least. I love Halo for a reason and if you want to change the Fundamentals of a series you're better off just making a new IP instead of changing a incredibly successful one.
Thats not saying a want the same game everytime out. I just don't want a beloved franchise changed to something I don't even recognize anymore.

Usually I'm all for games going into a different direction. But for a series like Halo, and the fact that it is the flagship exclusive title of the Xbox360, that's a little too ambitious of an idea and too big of a risk for Microsoft to make on such a fan favorite.
If it was a spinoff title to the series, then maybe. But for HALO 4?! They would've crucified him if it didn't work.
down311
Well the creative direction part is pretty much done by now as I'm sure the story arch is drawn out. Frank O'Connor is Halo anyway, Franky is going to make the game for the fans and I'm pretty confident that he will one up Bungie's work.

"The Halo I wanted to build was fundamentally different . . . "
I think if you want to develop something "fundamentally different", don't call it Halo. This is already a transition under a lot of scrutiny and skepticism from fans and critics. Bungie and Microsoft have repeatedly tried to reassure us that Halo is in good hands, with developers who will respect its tradition and legacy. I don't mind some innovations with each release in the Halo series. But it sounds like Ryan was envisioning much more than that. As such, I think it was a good move for him to leave and start something new.

Good Riddance.

Good move Ryan!
I am sure he just trying to add blood squirts, with a little more red in it. Then Gangstersoft said.......nope! We need this title to stay clean for the kiddies out there.
I can't wait to see what Ryan comes up with next. If anyone could make a halo killer. Hey I wonder if Sony would be in the market for a game like that?????
Socrates'sMind
My only question is who is now going to be the Creative Director now that Ryan Payton has moved on? I don't see Mr. Frank O'Connor taking the helm since he is the Franchise Director.
Liquid Swords
No Bungie and now the Director quits? Not looking good for the future of Halo.
Soulself
Yeah, no reason to make this out to be a bigger deal than it is. It sounds like he wanted to take Halo in a very risky and new direction and that wasn't what they wanted, so he decided to move on.
swanychargers
Camaro...this isn't a driver forum...this is halo...driver isn't in the same league as halo...anyways i think Ryan is sincere. I don't think its too big of deal. Just hope Frank O'connor has everything going right at 343.
