With summer starting to come to an end, it's only fitting that we offer you the perfect book fit for gamers, geeks, and gluttons of pop culture. Ernest Cline, who wrote the Star Wars love affair Fanboys and has sold a film called Thundercade about reclaiming high scores to Lakeshore, has penned his first novel. Ready Player One is set in the near future where everyone uses a massive virtual game/reality called OASIS to escape real life.
But when the creator of that game dies, he leaves behind a massive fortune to the person who can find the easter egg he's buried deep within. Three keys lead to the treasure, and the story is told from the point of view of a young 18 year old boy who has found the first key. Part Willy Wonka and part I Love The 80s, this novel is easily accessible and totally enjoyable to anyone who's ever experienced retro games. There's even a Ready Player One 8-bit game you can play to prepare you for the experience.
