If you're thinking of picking up Deus Ex: Human Revolution at your local GameStop, you might want to reconsider. GameStop is removing coupons for a free OnLive copy of the game from PC releases. They've instructed employees to open DE:HR boxes and remove the offending coupon. If you buy Human Revolution directly from OnLive, it will cost you $49.99, meaning the coupon is pretty valuable.
A leaked email purportedly sent by Josh Ivanoff, a Field Operations Manager with GameStop reads:
"Please immediately remove and discard the On Live [sic] coupon from all regular PC versions of Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Our desire is to not have this coupon go to any customers after this announcement."

According to a GameStop's Beth Sharum, quoted by GameSpy, "Square Enix packed the competitor's coupon with our DE:HR product without our prior knowledge and we did pull and discard these coupons."
Here's the company's official statement, via its Facebook page:
"Regarding the Deus Ex: Human Revolution OnLive Codes: We don’t make a habit of promoting competitive services without a formal partnership. Square Enix packed the competitor’s coupon with our DXHR product without our prior knowledge and we did pull these coupons. While the new products may be opened, we fully guarantee the condition of the discs to be new. If you find this to not be the case, please contact the store where the game was purchased and they will further assist."
GameStop's pre-order copy of Deus Ex comes with an opportunity to win yourself $20,000 worth of Deus Ex augmentations for your living room, so it's not as if GameStop and Square hadn't been speaking previously.
While GameStop didn't mention it, if I had to guess, I'd guess the real reason for the coupon debacle is because GameStop recently purchased Spawn Labs, a streaming game service that is a direct competitor to OnLive. Maybe this is evidence of why game retailers shouldn't also be publishers.
I've put a call in to GameStop to get some comment on the matter, and I'll update this story once I hear back.

I wonder if they will do anything to fix this, or does this spell the end for gamestop/EB GAMEs? because this is fraud. Opening and using a game and then selling it and advertising it is fraud. What they have done is illegal unethical and just down right bad for the gaming community and community of video game collectors.

They have all the legal right. It is considered breaking the law to purposely place any content for their competition in the store. Actually the makers of Deus Ex should be happy that they aren't in court. And back in the day, all of the games were opened and stored in their cases. Not until just recently did they implement the fact that the game wasn't new if the case wasn't plasticked. So chill out you haters because GameStop is just trying to keep their online streaming service going, and OnLive IS their competition. The publisher is at fault here.

This is why i havent step in a gamestop store for over three years now and not planning to do so....gamestop is a complete overprised store and they dont have the right to remove any content from the publisher ...and on top of that u r gonna end up paying for an open game.....complete rip off.....go to hell gamestop...thing were way better back in the times with Eb games down here in FL....

I understand when they are doing, still doesn't make it right. Haven't gotten a game from Gamestop for quite a while.
LaughingWolf
I understand why they did that, still not right though. I haven't gotten a game from Gamestop in such a long time.

Thus another reason why shopping at GameStop is a last resort option for me!

That's pretty low. Who wants to buy a guy that was opened by some disgruntled employee getting paid 6 dollars an hour with a boss that's 5 years younger than him? Not me.

Ha...so that's what that coupon is...good thing I ordered from Amazon...&uck Gamestop and their self-benefiting practices...on principle, they should drop the price if they are going to break seals and sell product.

I was wondering why my new copy had a weird shrink wrap on it. It was like someone reshrunk the item. Going to call GS tonight and either return the item or get comped for it.. That's not cool and really pisses me off.
