Trash Talk: EA Says Activision Will Be Out Of Shooters In 2-3 Years

Battlefield 3 Vs. Modern Warfare 3 Gameplay Comparison -- Boats Vs. Tanks

This fall will see one of the greatest retail showdowns in video game history when EA's Battlefield 3 goes up against Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Both games come out this fall, and aim to be the definitive military shooter experience. Battlefield 3, though, is the definite underdog here. Activision's Call of Duty franchise is practically synonymous with "shooter" in the public mind, but EA has some big plans for Battlefield 3, and isn't afraid to mix it up verbally, either.

"You've got every reason to be nervous," EA spokesperson Jeff Brown said in comments directed at Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg. "Last year Activision had a 90 share in the shooter category. This year, Battlefield 3 is going to take you down to 60 or 70. At that rate, you'll be out of the category in 2-3 years. If you don't believe me, go to the store and try to buy a copy of Guitar Hero or Tony Hawk."

Oooh! That's a disssss.

Brown's comment reiterates EA's plan to make a very serious dent in Activision's shooter sales this fall, but I wonder if the company isn't over-reaching a bit. Call of Duty is such a huge franchise, it's hard to imagine it not existing in only 2-3 years. Plus, Activision proved with Black Ops that is can release an excellent Call of Duty game without the help of the original creators of Modern Warfare, the team behind developer Infinity Ward.

Battlefield may be blowing everyone away who follows gaming very closely, but remember: Most people who buy games aren't super plugged-in to what's happening in the industry, especially when it comes to unreleased games. The name "Call of Duty" has massive recognition among the general public who regard the series as the gold standard in action shooters, and most "casual-hardcore" gamers haven't seen the Battlefield 3 trailers that are blowing everyone's minds in the industry.

No matter which company ultimately triumphs, the real winners here are you, the gamers. Competition between companies for the "hardcore" shooter market will almost certainly result in better and better games, so no matter which game you favor, you have to hope this war of games continues.

I am very excited to see how this turns out. I will not be buying either of the 2 games in November (Pre-Ordered SKYRIM <3) but my hopes are with Battlefield 3 and EA. The thought of Activision losing Call of Duty almost makes me smile.

I'm getting pretty tired of EA's constant dissing and degrading comment towards Activision and Call of Duty in general. Everything DICE has said has been pretty neutral and fair, heck, Fourzerotwo(Robert Bowling) and I believe Demize99(DICE) constantly compliment each other's games and trailers. Why does EA have to ruin this by making the top execs look worse than Kotick?

Playing both Black ops and Bad Company 2, I can tell you the better experience overall is playing battlefield. Sure COD can be fun for a few minutes, but with battlefield I could play longer and not get bored. In CoD you can blame your "team" when you lose because you can get stuck with some real idiots. In Battlefield you can't blame your team, sure not everyone is good, but it actually is more of a team effort, not just a one person Army.

However I know Battlefield won't do as good because it's true. Most people that play don't keep up with what happens in the industry. CoD is established, Battlefield hasn't been around much. I played Battlefield 2 on the Xbox, then didn't see much of Battlefield for a while. I liked it more than CoD.

I don't know why EA is suddenly turning into massive dicks towards Activision and CoD.

AND LET THE FANBOY FLAME WAR COMMENCE!

I hold no specific biases towards either company. Although, I do prefer EA's BF franchise simply on the fact that they don't release a $60 game update every year. They take their time and produce a completely new game every two or three years with an occasional and very fun DLC which generally is free or cheaper than Call of Duty's mid-year DLCs.

Activision milks everything to death and over-saturates the market so yeah, I agree with EA. It's only a matter of time. I don't see it happening as soon as 2-3 years but it will eventually happen just like every other major franchise Acitivsion had which ruled the market and no one thought would die until they also killed it by over-saturating it and failing to innovate.

That's like saying McDonalds is the best restaurant because lots of people go there.

Hate to be on my hipster high horse, but corporations have learned how to manipulate people via marketing into settling for the bare minimum of innovation. Activision has just perfected this art and is doing their best to draw attention away from the dried-up corpses in the alleyway labelled "Guitar Hero", "Tony Hawk", etc.

How does it feel, mass-market gamers, knowing that you're being fed McDonalds because the industry believes you'll pass up a good steak for a $.10 burger?
