The inclusion of a constant internet connection DRM in Ubisoft's PC version of From Dust has caused quite a controversy among PC gamers. Originally, Ubisoft said that the game where you control nature would not require a permanent internet connection, but gamers found after they bought it that it does require you to have a connection to log in for each play session. So Ubisoft lied, kind of.
"We are aware of some confusion over the inclusion of DRM in the release of From Dust on PC," said the company on the official Ubisoft message boards."To prevent any on-going confusion we would like to clarify From Dust PC will release with DRM requiring a one-time only online activation," continues the statement. "After which you will be able to play the game offline."

But the real issue is that PC gamers weren't even given a proper port of the indie title. The game is capped at a pathetic 30 FPS for the PC version. On top of that, gamers are complaining about awful controls that haven't been optimized for a mouse in a game where better controls would have been a huge advantage.
The PC community is in a bit of an uproar over Ubisoft deceiving them over From Dust. They're saying that it's completely unacceptable for From Dust to come with these flaws that Ubisoft said wouldn't be in there.
Personally, I understand why people get mad at constant internet DRM but I don't mind it myself. If I'm on my computer then there's a good chance that I'm going to also be on the internet. Those folks traveling with laptops don't always get this luxury, I understand, but for me it isn't such an issue.
What I don't like is how poorly the PC version was ported from the console version. In the end Ubisoft obviously thinks they will make more money on games with DRM on them, but if they lose money on the game because it was ported badly, well, how do they justify that?
What do you think about the From Dust DRM controversy? Will this type of DRM prevent you from buying the PC version of the game?

Even if you bought the game legitimately, just get a cracked EXE so that you don't have to deal with the DRM anymore. Cracked EXEs always get around that stuff. The awful port flaws, on the other hand, is something you're just stuck with.

Well, in addition to it being a really crappy port and needing to register with their client, my main issue with Ubisoft is their underhanded business practices that they are getting away with.
They previously stated that the game required a "one-time only activation. After which you will be able to play offline." (This is from a Ubisoft forum manager.) However, as of yesterday morning, they deleted that particular post as if it never existed(!) and replaced it with one that states that it "requires an internet connection when you start the game."
Bottom line for me: Ubisoft falsely advertised the game and are trying to discreetly cover their tracks. They broke a promise they made prior to releasing the game and this I find unacceptable.

I consider myself somewhere between a hardcore gamer and an average gamer. But I have noticed that more and more gaming companies are producing games by businessmen instead of gamers. I have a degree in Business so I completely understand the business side of things. Though, I have noticed that there have been less and less gaming companies that I am loyal to. I am down to about 2, Ubisoft no longer being one of them. Games have been released and then patches are required within the first few weeks of release to fix glitches. I personally would rather wait a few extra weeks to get a completed game, than have the game rushed out and partially done. There has also been more fine print with games. This is a perfect example. I completely understand that they technically stated "Constant internet connection won't be necessary when playing From Dust's campaign and challenge mode on the PC", which does imply that a connection is required at some point, just not constant. However why not just state outright From Dust PC will release with DRM requiring a one-time only online activation from the beginning? That would have prevented this whole issue to begin with. I do play games that require constant internet connection, a specific MMORPG. However, if I were to buy a game under the pretences that there was no constant internet required and then found out that I had to log in for each play session, I would be very upset and I would consider an internet connection is required to play, because if I do not have an internet connection I could not log in which means I could not play. Most of the time I have internet connection, so it wouldn t be an issue, but every once in a while I want to play games where I do not have internet connection, maybe in a hotel on a trip or in a car/airplane and I would not be able to play this game.

yeah, its not exactly clear whether you need to log one 1 time ever, or log on at the beginning of each session...
I don't buy ubisoft games specifically because i don't want to support a company that will sacrifice gameplay for drm. It was obvious how little Ubisoft thinks of the pc gaming community well before they lied about the drm and gave horrendous controls to the PC for From Dust.
I don't feel sorry for the people that bought it on the PC, this type of thing is a regular basis on the PC. Duke Nukem and Borderlands also has had horrible PC controls.. A PC gamer needs to take into account which companies do and don't respect the pc community when buying video games.

I'm confused does it "require you to have a connection to log in for each play session" or is it just "requiring a one-time only online activation"?

I'm loving the game on PC, not terribly far into it, but I do have to say...the controls are kind of wonky. I'm constantly fighting them. I'm wondering if a civil letter to ubisoft is in order, because I really want to support Eric Chahi.
DRM I dont mind so much, though I did have to wrestle with the online registration a bit.
