Minecraft Sells 500K Copies, Now Has 1.6 Million Users

We're living the dream, folks! That is, of course, assuming your dream consists of playing Minecraft on the go (that's what all gamers dream of, right?). Minecraft - Pocket Edition takes Mojang's popular world-building game into the mobile space today, starting with a timed exclusive release for Sony's Xperia Play phone, a press release confirms.

A wider release will follow after a "limited time" has elapsed, though for now the game will apparently only run on Android devices. An iOS version has reportedly been in development as well, though there's no mention of it in the Pocket Edition announcement.

Minecraft - Pocket Edition, much like its older sibling on PCs, is an unfinished product. The mobile release arrives as Alpha version 0.1 and focuses entirely on the creative side of the game. Players will be able to build using a variety of blocks (36 different kinds) in whichever randomized world the game calls up.

Pocket Edition also includes multiplayer support for local wireless networks, allowing friends to jump into and shape a world together. Just like the PC version of the game, Mojang intends to support the mobile release with frequent content updates.
