Out of nowhere indie-game hit Minecraft has just surpassed 3 million sales, but all is not perfect in the pixelated world created by Markuss "Notch" Persson. According to Notch, developer Bethesda has threatened him over the name of his company's in-development game "Scrolls."
Here's the tweet:
"Just got a letter from Bethesta's lawyers. They claim 'Scrolls' infringes on their trademark and everyone will confuse it with Skyrim."
Could it be that the makers of Skyrim are a little afraid of the fact that Minecraft is scheduled for release on the same day that Skyrim hits? I would say this is highly unlikely... Bethesda's legal team has an obligation to patrol the video game world for names that might infringe on the company's trademarks, so I seriously doubt it's anything personal.
Here's Notch's even-handed twitter response to the legal letter:
"I still <3 Bethesda. This is hopefully just lawyers being lawyers."
If you'd like an inside look at lawyers being lawyers, here's the actual letter.
Tell me, readers, are you likely to confuse Mojang's Scrolls with Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim?

Isn't our societal economic system grand. Almost makes me give a crap about about these multimillion dollar corporations, almost. How can anybody make any valid correlation between "The Elder Scrolls" and just "Scrolls"? I can totally understand trademarking multiple words put together to form a title, or even a specific sentence, but one word. If this goes any further than a statement by Bethesda, they have lost all my respect. I can't see this holding up in court. If it does, our trademark system is a total failure.

Tell me people don't seriously believe that Notch didn't know what he was doing by naming the game Scrolls. It's clearly to create some gamer confusion (already has) and get more sales. Let the game stand on its own with its own name, Notch. Nice try though and for trying, you're getting a bunch of free publicity, aren't you? Slick.

So let me get this straight
Skyrim release date: 11/11
Minecraft release date: 11/18
Yep that's the same day

Scrolls? thats it? My god. Maybe Activision should sue Call of Juarez and Call of cthulhu because people might confuse it for Call of Duty!

Wait, so both these things aren't the Dead Seas Scrolls? And Minecraft isn't a hybrid of Minesweeper and World of Warcraft? I'm so confused by words.
