Out of nowhere indie-game hit Minecraft has just surpassed 3 million sales, but all is not perfect in the pixelated world created by Markuss "Notch" Persson. According to Notch, developer Bethesda has threatened him over the name of his company's in-development game "Scrolls."
Here's the tweet:
"Just got a letter from Bethesta's lawyers. They claim 'Scrolls' infringes on their trademark and everyone will confuse it with Skyrim."
Could it be that the makers of Skyrim are a little afraid of the fact that Minecraft is scheduled for release on the same day that Skyrim hits? I would say this is highly unlikely... Bethesda's legal team has an obligation to patrol the video game world for names that might infringe on the company's trademarks, so I seriously doubt it's anything personal.
Here's Notch's even-handed twitter response to the legal letter:
"I still <3 Bethesda. This is hopefully just lawyers being lawyers."
If you'd like an inside look at lawyers being lawyers, here's the actual letter.
Tell me, readers, are you likely to confuse Mojang's Scrolls with Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim?

I agree with Notch. It's not BGS, it's the ZeniMax lawyers.

can i ask WTF IS MINECRAFT in semi-jest to get 20 thumbs down?
or just make fun of the name "notch" for 10 thumbs down?
I'll leave it up to you, the viewer!
ps: Skyrim>Minecraft (you just got GOT!)

this is stupid since the casual gamer, i.e. friends of mine that don't play rpgs often don't even recognize the elder scrolls as the name! they ask me what game i'm talking about till i say oblivion, and most people probably only know the elder scrolls 5 skyrim as skyrim.

This is like that one guy who tried to sue any game with Edge in its title. It is really stupid. No one is going to confuse Elder Scrolls, a long standing RPG franchise, with a game called Scrolls that is an RTS type game using magical scrolls.
Lawyers be stupid.
Also, Minecrafts release has been pushed back as least a week, and is no longer being released on the same day as Skyrim.

Hahahaha, really? That's just ridiculous.

You know I always seem to find myself confused why Minecraft is acting so weird and why I keep dying so fast, only to realize I've been playing Minesweeper the whole time. This threat of lawsuit will definitely help clear up future confusion.

This is dumb. Let them have their little petty conflicts. Im gunna buy both games anyways

They're not doing this because of an actual fear of mockbusting; thy're doing this because they want the Minecraft folk to change their release date. This stuff happens all the time in all media, and while it seems like pointless bullying on the part of the bigger company, they did have this date first, and it's not like it's a traditional Tuesday release anyway. Companies of equal stature have made deals that started with similar posturing. This is just some weird part of the esoteric world of business, kind of like a slap with a white glove to start a duel. Nobody's getting sued. For the record, I plan on getting both games, whether they're released on that Friday or not.

This guy is genius. I have a strong feeling he knew this would happen. Now he's just getting more publicity. I didn't even know about "Scrolls", but now it's on my radar.

sounds like Notch is just using this situation to get publicity, he needs to cause i read about games all the time and never heard of this Minecraft. Yea dude, Bethesda is real jealous, you know their only at the top of the video game industry with EA and a few others. Maybe Notch should just change the name it is gonna suck a fat one no matter what it is called, on the other hand Skyrim will be awesome no matter the name they could just call it crap and I would still love it maybe more.

I here people calling it "Elder Scrolls" and not just "Scrolls", so imo I think it's fine.
pilum000
No ive just been callin it skyrim anyway
snakebit1995
the confusion line makes no sense no one whould confuse the two if you wanted the game you whould know the name
that and thanks for showing the letter becuse we cant read it. it'swritten in a differnt languege
JustTheBeginning
In all honestly, Notch probably did pick the name based on "Elder Scrolls". Also, yes, he is generating more publicity for a game I did not know about til now because he publicizes a dispute that is normally kept between the two companies. News flash Notch, this is a legal thing, by posting it public, your turning it into a personal thing by making Bethesda look like bad guys when in reality, that is just what legal departments do.
I do not like what Bethesda's lawyers are up too but Notch is not exactly playing Mr. Clean either.

Some kid's mom is going to buy the wrong game.

I agree that it's just lawyers being lawyers because I don't think Bethesda is really scared of competition from Minecraft. It's just the way it is. This is why Bethesda has lawyers. It's not some big company trying to shut down a small company. Bethesda's legal team is just looking out for Bethesda, which is what they're paid for.
B-minus
So i guess this might put an end to the possibility of Skyrim being created in minecraft like Todd Howard and Notch talked about doing. Oh well the fans can just do it i guess.
