Are you a computer-savvy gaming geek who likes to mess around with code and see what you can cook up? You're going to love this news if so. id Software's John Carmack revealed yesterday during his QuakeCon 2011 keynote that the source code for Doom 3 will soon be available for you to tinker with.
The release of the 2004 game's guts will happen sometime after Rage arrives on October 4; Carmack said to expect it this year. He said in his address that he sees the source code release as a challenge to other developers. Me? I see it as a chance to play a modded version of Doom 3 in which every zombie you meet is dressed in a tux and a yellow top hat.
