PlayStation Vita Online Modes Revealed: Near, Party, LiveArea, and Activity -- Will This Revolutionize Portable Gaming?

Bad news for my fellow Americans and our friends across the pond in Europe. There will be no PlayStation Vita for us this year. Sony's Kaz Hirai revealed that the handheld gaming device will launch in Japan by Christmas, but the rest of the world will be waiting until 2012, an AP report reveals.

Hirai didn't call the newly detailed release plan a "delay," though he didn't offer any specific timing for either release. The goal in waiting on the US and Europe launches, he said, is to ensure that the Vita arrives with a strong offering of game. Stop looking pointedly at Nintendo as you read this. The 3DS tried.

"We packed so much into the device and made it very affordable," Hirai said this morning during a press conference at Sony's Tokyo HQ. "There is no need to lower the price just because somebody else that happens to be in the video game business decided that they were going to lower their price."

The price he's referring to, first announced at E3, is $249 for the Wi-Fi-only model and $299 for 3G + Wi-Fi.

Just read and heard that the PS Vita games can be purchased at Gamestop or retailers for people (Like Me who cannot afford 3-4G & WiFi) who can't do online mobile! I can now say good bye to the Nintendo. I was raised with Nintendo, and now I will evolve into Sony Portable!! Yahooo!

Guess we Portable playstation fans are getting a middle finger from Santa this year. I bet 3DS owners are fist pumping with their little consoles as we type.

drop it to 350$ and i may consider buying it if its worth 350$ due to the 3DS's overpriceing aka charging $250 now $179 for it costing only about 100$ in productivity i expect it to be good looks good but looks are decieving

Sony does a lot of Beta testing, so in a way I'm happy that Japan gets the Vita early.

That way it's only a small percentage that Sony has to deal with initially when everyone logs online with their Vita.

By the time Europe and North America get the Vita, it will have had a bit of time to fix some early issues so that we'll have a more stable piece of hardware....

Is it import friendly? Is the Vita region locked?

How stupid...this holiday could have been Vita vs 3DS and Sony stood to make a ton of sales with their more powerful system appealing to those who view the 3DS as less powerful and for the younger generation. Now Nintendo has no competition when it comes to handhelds and along with the price cut the sales are going to be astronomical. It's almost like Nintendo asked Sony to do them a favor and hold off on the Vita until after the holiday.

All things considered, by the time December rolls around, I will probably be broke anyways. What with all the good games coming out between now and then.

This might be a bad move on Sony's part. This whole launch after the holidays thing works for video games because they're cheap(er) and even though people may or may not be big on spending more after the holidays, there is the factor that you can play through most of the holiday games in time to trade in for the new stuff. However, video game systems are expensive. This year the holidays are going to see huge sales in both Hardware and Software for the competition given big name releases. I'm not sure how many people are going to be for the idea of dropping that much money after the holiday rush.

sorry for the double post but one this i don't understand is why release the successor for a handheld in a place where the first one is still selling #1 and not selling it first in the areas where the original PSP is effectively dead and has been for a while.

i am not trying to be a fanboy in saying this since i already have a 3DS and love it and love it more with 20 free games :-D

but this is not wise. To give their competition an entire holiday season with a price drop and lots of major games coming out for it this holiday season.

The 3DS will be $80 cheaper had the lead of holidays sales with games like Super Mario land 3D, Mario Kart, Ocarina of time, Star fox, Mario Kart, and more = no bueno.

I am actually shocked sony won't capitalize on the 3DS short sales by releasing their E3 wining handheld with near HD like visuals, dual analogs, PS3 integration, etc... before it really takes off and have to play catchup again.

Well it looks like I will have to give my PS3 a little more attention till I can get my hands on it. ~sigh~ Maybe I'll even check out the Wii U depending on when both are actually suppose to come out.

you have to look at all the games coming out for the consoles this holiday season, think about how much money people will be throwing around for games like Uncharted 3, MW3, BF3, BatmanAC, Resistance3, Gears3, Forza4, and more. They're aren't to many people out there that can afford more than two of these games let alone all these games AND then get the PSVita on top of it, some may be able to but most won't, it's just unrealistic to think that can happen. I'd say they did they right thing by waiting until sometime next year when they have a STRONGER line-up of launch titles.

I'm not surprised. Hardware is often delayed and Japan always gets it before we do. I guess if they're going to focus on games then they'll have more time to convince me the Vita is worth getting. The PSP was kind of a disappointment and I already have a 3DS.

As was said there's definitely no shortage of PS3 and 3DS games this fall. Sony can take their time to do it right.

Good. This gives me more time to save up the money for it and more time to enjoy the ridiculous amount of games coming this fall.

Wait... So this is the PS Phone?...

How do you make phone calls with this thing?

What networks does it work with?...

It looks like a PSP... Did we already give up on the PSP, PSP Go and all the other PSP things?...

Hmmm.... Maybe Sony and Nintendo will make the PSWii
