Battlefield 3

Battlefield won't be annualized according to BF series producer Patrick Bach. If the series were to mirror the production of Call of Duty the quality would suffer ultimately killing the series, something DICE and EA wouldn't allow, according to Bach.

“The business goals for us are not to release a game every year,” Bach mentioned in an interview with Gamerzines.

“If we were to release another big Battlefield title next year, that would mean that we’d have less than a year to build it, and that would mean that we’d have to have another studio building it for us, which would mean it wouldn’t have that DICE seal of approval, which would mean they’d just have to release a copy of the game we just released.

“EA would never force us to release a game every year. I think that would dilute the vision of the franchise, and you will eventually kill the franchise by doing that.”

Gamerzines asked him if he could see the series being handled by alternating developers; the way Treyarch and Infinity Ward have made Call of Duty. Bach said, “in theory" it was possible. He did admit they could release expansions, like Battlefield Bad Company 2 Vietnam, on a yearly basis.

“What we noticed with Battlefield: Bad Company 2 was that if you spend enough time on making an expansion pack like Vietnam there’s enough content to make it feel new and fresh. It’s not only a map pack, it’s weapons and vehicles, and it makes the game feel fresh again,” Bach added.

If you take these quotes at face value I think EA and DICE have a great hold of Battlefield. I get the impression they favor quality of quantity. At least, I get that impression until I think about Battlefield's release schedule over the last few years. There has been a Battlefield game, if not two, released every year, with the exception of 2003 and 2007.

  • 2002     Battlefield 1942
  • 2004     Battlefield Vietnam
  • 2005     Battlefield 2
  • 2006     Battlefield 2142
  • 2008     Battlefield: Bad Company
  • 2009     Battlefield Heroes
  • 2009     Battlefield 1943
  • 2010     Battlefield: Bad Company 2
  • 2010     Battlefield Online
  • 2011     Battlefield Play4Free
  • 2011     Battlefield 3

When Bach says they will not annulaize the series I assume he's talking solely about the numerical Battlefield games, BF1, BF2, and BF3. I'm not sure why BFBad Company or BF: 1943 don't count. I guess you could argue they don't share the same story and the only common thread is part of their title. But with that logic couldn't you argue that Call of Duty isn't annual either? Only Modern Warfare and MW2 share a story, Black Ops, World at War and Modern Warfare only have have a common title.

Do you think Battlefield is already on an annual schedule?

i really just normally keep my options to myself but i kinda wanted to add this in on your research and stuff...

Call of Duty: PC release Oct. 29th 2003 (even the N-gage on Nov 23rd)
Call of Duty United offence: PC release September 14th 2004
Call of Duty finest hour: PS2, Gamecube, Xbox Nov 16th 2004
Call of Duty 2: PC release Oct 25th, Xbox 360 Nov 15th 2005
Call of Duty 2 Big Red One: Gamecube, Ps2, xbox Nov 1st 2005
    Call of Duty 3: Xbox, 360, PS2 Nov 7th, PS3 Nov 17th and Wii on Dec 19th 2006
Call of Duty Road to Victory: PSP March 14th 2007
Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare: PS3, PC, 360 Nov 6, Wii Nov 10th 2007
Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare (DS if anyone cares... lol) Nov 5th 2007
Call of Duty World at War: PS3, 360, Wii, DS, PC Nov 11th 2008
Call of Duty World at War Final Fronts: PS2 Nov 11th 2008
    Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2: 360, PS3, PC Nov 10th 2009
Call of Duty Black Ops: PS3, 360, PC Nov 9th 2010

so that's just history of Call of Duty compared to Battlefield that you listed... and not a huge expert on call of duty games but i know they released a nice chunk of Map Packs for each at $15 a piece... i know black ops is having their what... 5th one coming soon for another $15? that's 5 Map Packs in less then a year just for people to turn around and spend $59.99 on the new...

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 Nov 8th 2011 (for PS3, 360, PC, and possibly DS

think there is a huge difference in what Call of Duty is doing to what Battlefield is doing... so Battlefield had like what 11 (most are not even full length games) to Call of Duty releasing 14+ (and an unknown amount of DLC for $15 each) each year.... so no honestly don't think Battlefield is doing what call of duty is doing....

Of course they wont, however i bet if successful it WILL come every 2 years. So if the next medal of honor is expected next year EA WILL have a shooter to compete with CoD every year....

For what it is worth, the release schedule shown above may seem like they are releasing every year but the games are not the same such as Call of Duty is. With Call of Duty the games are coming out every year with no upgrades other than features, modes, and guns. No progress is made. With the Battlefield games, they have their earlier games which were fairly similar to how Call of Duty's schedule was but with games such as Battlefield Heroes, Online and Play4Free are only different ways to get into the Battlefield Series. Heroes to appeal to the younger and more casual crowd while Play4Free caters to those who want a more realistic and mature look or a fresher experience to gear up to Battlefield 3's release. Battlefield 1943 utilized the engine introduced with Battlefield Bad Company 2 taking players back to the war era they had previously enjoy but with a much better engine with accessibility much simpler as a downloadable game. Also eases players back into Battlefield Bad Company 2 as well as keeping Battlefield's name alive on consoles since it was recognized as a PC title before the Bad Company releases. So look at the release list this way.

    2002 Battlefield 1942
    2005 Battlefield 2
    2008 Battlefield: Bad Company
    2010 Battlefield: Bad Company 2
    2011 Battlefield 3

And if we were to say that the Bad Company series was a way get the Battlefield title popular on consoles, then look at the list this way.

    2002 Battlefield 1942
    2005 Battlefield 2
    2011 Battlefield 3

In the end it is really how you look at it. Just because they come out with some online experience or arcade title doesn't necessarily mean it is a full fledged DICE game, just other way to ease the pain of wait for Battlefield 3 for another two months. At least it's easing mine.

QUALITY OVER QUANTITY. Take a look at how many battlefield games are out compared to cod... When I say battlefield, all the recent ones. Or if you want to be technical, take a look at EVERY game from each series. Battlefield wins easily for quality. Cod has literally been the same from the get go, but battlefield. Every single one is a different experience easily.

Activision has 2 companies working on call of duty. Infinity ward has the MW series and treyarch made BO and WAW

This is why I LOVE Dice, they understand quality not quantity. And the spin-off Battlefield games dont count. BF 1942/3 was made years ago on the PC, they just remade it for the current consoles

Truth is that both Battlefield and CoD are over saturated, but Battlefield feels less so because it spreads itself wider. For example, Play4Free is a PC title that is browser based, so while it's still Battlefield, it keeps itself separated enough to not make the franchise itself feel like it's lacking innovation. CoD has pretty much stuck to one type of thing without expanding it's variety, so it feels like it's just repetition. If they would have skipped a year once in a while, and done something that was CoD, but not Infinity Ward, or Teryarch, they could have avoided CoD feeling so bleh.

maybe they are a little but i think they should be done by DICE. but i agree, making a big name title every year is a big mistake. happy to know it wont happen.

This is smart of DICE. They aren't rushing the development of their games so they can properly make them.

Battlefield Heroes, 1943, Online, and Play4Free don't count. They might release something with the battlefield name every year, but not a DICE title
