Rod Fergusson is one of the names that's been associated with Epic Games' Gears of War series since it launched in 2006. He serves as executive producer now on Gears of War 3, which hits stores on September 20. Fergusson offered some of his thoughts on last month's leak of an early build of the game's single-player campaign in a recent interview with Edge.
He first expressed a measure of relief that the leak came from an Xbox 360 game, since "it's somewhat limited" in comparison to the relative ease of pirating a leaked PC game. "An Xbox leak requires certain modifications, which means at least the audience is smaller."
Silver lining aside, Fergusson finds it "frustrating" and "saddening" that such an early example of the game would get out there after so many people have worked so hard to create something polished. The leaked content comes from a pre-beta build and there's disappointment that, for a segment of people, their first experience with Gears 3 won't be what was intended.
Fergusson understands how strong the temptation might be for a diehard fan to hunt down gameplay footage from the leaked build, because "it gives them a peek behind the curtain into the development process." To those people, he makes the fair point that "nobody wants to watch 'The Making of Avatar' before they've watched the actual movie."
Don't take that the wrong way; Fergusson is most definitely not encouraging anyone to track down the leak and try it out AFTER the game is released. Go read that interview though. It's very long and filled with many words about Gears 3.
