Diablo 3 Auction House Introduces Real Money Transactions

The Diablo 3 auction house feature is going to introduce real money transactions, and Blizzard is braced for an initial backlash today once everyone gets that news. No longer will players need to quest and loot forever to find the perfect piece of equipment they're looking for as they can now purchase it with in-game gold, or with real-world currency. Additionally, you'll be able to auction off your hard-earned loot at any moment, and you can convert the gold you make from that into a Blizzard e-balance, or even into real cash. That's right, say hello to Blizzard-supported gold farming.

We imagine that you'll probably have a few questions about this, so keep reading to find out everything that we know so far. While we were able to play our way through the full beta, that experience did not include the auction house as part of the built. But, Blizzard anticipates having a version of the auction house up and running when the beta comes out.

First, of all, if you're sitting there pulling your hair out and drooling, we can understand your frustration. Or if you're out there smiling and already swimming in your virtual currency Scrooge McDuck-style, then you'll also want to pay attention. We're going to give you all of the information about the auction house, and then let you decide how you feel about it.

Diablo 3 Auction House: Blizzard Explains Why »

First of all, why did Blizzard decide to go this way? Obviously trading in Diablo 2 wasn't perfect, and if any of you were around during the days of rampant duping and selling off of materials, you knew that everyone was a multimillionaire. The objects became so commonplace that Stones of Jordan became the new currency, and things devolved from there. Rob Pardo even referenced the fabled "Chat Gem" when talking about how that economy got away from them.

At its heart, Diablo is a loot game. Finding new items are a big part of the experience, and they are extremely random. Unlike World of Warcraft, which uses a deterministic approach to loot drops, Diablo is randomized. A high-level character may drop a rare item, but you have no clue what it will be. It could take you ages to track down something specific, which is why the need to trade things became so popular. It was much easier to find someone willing to trade for that socketed shield you needed, rather than trying to grind for it and hope it would pop up one day.

But despite the need for trading, there were only a few ways to trade in Diablo 2. You could meet up with other players and trade using the in-game trading interface, but it was still often difficult to find specific items. You could post in the forums and chat channels, or use shady third-party websites to try and track down what you needed. eBay was a popular choice as well, but it wasn't the ideal way to find what you needed. Blizzard decided that they want to make this a better experience for players: hence the Diablo 3 Auction House. However, this isn't the auction house that you might have experienced in World of Warcraft.

This time around, you'll be able to buy and sell items with in-game gold as well as real-world currency, and it will be integrated directly into the game client. Right now this is restricted to Items, gold and components that have been put into the auction house by other players, as Blizzard "has no plans" to put items directly into the auction house themselves. But, that doesn't mean that they won't do it eventually. Interested in buying a full-character? Blizzard is considering that as an option right now. Single auction house for each supported currency.

The auction house will have auto-bidding and instant buyout options, and a smart search by class. Players will be anonymous during trades, and there will be both real money and in-game gold auction houses. Hardcore players will not be able to use the real money auction house. There will be listing fees and transaction fees, although Blizzard plans to allow a certain number of "free" listings per account per month, but they'll still take a transaction fee if it sells. You can also choose to send the money you make in the auction house to your Blizzard e-balance and use it in the Blizzard store, or you can choose to send it to a third party payment provider to withdraw real cash, for a percentage. Once you've sent cash to your e-balance, it's locked in there, so you need to be sure what you're doing with that cash after you sell a bunch of items. Basically, the whole feature is like DiabloBay

Blizzard doesn't want this to be a "Diablo Store," and they're hoping it will facilitate player trading, and they cite several reasons for adding it. They claim it will be great for buyers and sellers, will work well with the design of the Diablo item system, and adds a great deal of depth and fun to the long-term game. According to Pardo, "The auction house in WoW has become its own metagame, we think that will happen here as well."

What do we think about all of this? There will undoubtebly be a huge backlash to this, especially amongst hardcore players who believe that you need to earn your way to a fully-outfitted character. While you'll still have to level up on your own (at least for now), new players will be able to come in and spend their own money to get awesome weapons, armor, and other items. But if that's what they want to spend their money on, then so be it. While there is bound to be a lot of negative reaction to this, it will die down in the weeks and months leading up to the game release, and then upon launch this will end up making a ton of money for Blizzard, and some people will figure out how to work the system for lots of cash.

If you need a primer, go read Cory Doctorow's terrific For The Win, which has players doing this very thing in-game, or check out all the details direct from Blizzard. So what do you think? Are you set to go for the gold in Diablo 3?

I'm beginning to think that it doesn't matter what the actual issue is people just see the company name blizzard and think "I hate WoW because its the most popular game in the world at the moment" then begin ranting about w/e blizzard is currently doing. I mean why is there so much vehemence about this feature, if you play Hardcore then you don't need to use the shop or at least don't need to use real money and can just use the in-game currency, then on top of that sell w/e you get. If you play casually you can buy your equipment rather then spending hundreds of hours grinding the in-game currency or hoping it drops. As far as I'm concerned its an easy solution to alleviate both of the equipment based anxieties for hardcore and casual gamers. So the fact that all you morons are just railing against it screams of the fact that you hate blizzard and in turn hate the idea, not the other way around. There is no real downside to this system unless you are actually just wanting a way to make money off of it, because all the people who will spend ungodly amounts of time playing the game will increase the supply of equipment and therefore lower the price so you don't get as much money when you sell your items.

This is a feature designed for the hardcore gamers to keep on playing. I stopped playing wow because i got all this money and couldnt do anything with it. All I cared to do was sell arena ratings for noobs, and after doing that for 2 seasons straight i realised I wasnt going to do anything with all that money, so i quit.

This is a feature that will allow hardcore gamers to earn real life money, wich is totally awesome.

This isn't their only fail idea. Blizzard good job on effing this game up. Real money for items? Required internet connection to play the campaign? What's next? I have been patiently waiting for this game for years now, this is what you hit us with? No worries, there are other games.

Don't act like Blizzard is doing anything new here. People would be selling this stuff for real money whether or not Blizzard allowed them. Blizzard just made a way so that they can take a slice of that pie.

Wow, what a disappointment. I could of seen this coming from an upstart gaming company short on capital but Blizzard? Really?!?! RMT is really becoming the scourge of MMO's or any game for that matter. I urge everyone in the gaming community to boycott any RMT function within any game. By all means buy and play the game, but please do so without RMT.

So basically the spambots already selling gear in Diablo 2 will be able to make their money directly from within the game, save on website costs, and do it all 100% legally too.

Players will eventually be out of the equation completely, since it's impossible to compete with professional farming bots running 24/7, and any money spent will go directly to them.

The only real difference i'm seeing here is that Blizzard will be making money off the bots this time, and what's to stop Blizzard from just creating and putting up items to sale for pure profit?

I don't see any bit of this news benefitting gamers (well maybe the really lazy ones), just the bots and blizzard.

I actually think the idea is pretty cool, I personally wont buy anything off of it. However, I may sell some nice junk that I don't really care for that I pick up down the road. Earn my "one or two lattes" Netflix plans on taking from me back!

This is utterly crazy, their is so many problems with this.

1st) As a hardcore gamer, their is no way I'll will play this game or recommend it to others now. It's an unfair advantage for another player, in a game of skill, to purchase their way to being the best. The sports equivalent of this example would be one baseball team facing off against another baseball team who uses steroids. It's simply an unfair advantage over the players (in both senses) who choose not to cheat. And you've got to consider this also, Diablo is going to have PvP. If Diablo was just a PvE game, I could slightly understand this move better. But this game is going to have direct to direct player competition! No matter how you slice or dice it, it's money vs. skill. Plain and simple.

    2) Their just encouraging hackers and other cheaters. Yeah, that's right Blizzard, you better be using that transaction fee money for more than just lining your pockets. Your going to have to fight against the swarm of hackers who are going to attempt to dupe every single item in the game. Oh yeah, and don't forget the Chinese, or the automated bots either. Their going camping and magic finding every single npc they can find. Your entire auction house economy is going to crumble as soon as it begins. Instead of helping cheaters, you should be preventing it.

I could probably go on with this, but I've already wrote way too much. Suffice to say, Guild Wars 2 and Star Wars: The Old Republic sound a lot more appealing.

Actually this is what you need to think about when it comes to converting in-game items to actual cash...

    Time spent on getting item
    Rarely of the item
    The demand for the item
    The usefulness of the item
    ---------------------------- -------------
Total $ e-currency then Blizzard takes off top = actual money made

If you sold an item for 10 dollars but you spent like 10 hours looking for it...
your basically working for chum change, that would be 1 dollar = 1hour

Of course Chinese Prisoners have no choice but to farm....

"Diablo 3's auction house will allow gamers to buy and sell items for real money. Check out our in-depth look at this potential game-changer."

    "...potential game-changer" ????

only potential??? no this is going to completely change the game and I'm still borderline on the idea but still slightly against it.

I'm wondering the ratio of item farmers to actual buyers there will be. I'm wondering if there will even be enough people that go ahead and spend real money on these fake items

This is the dumbest idea Blizzard has ever had. Real money? And I was looking forward to this game. Hello Torchlight 2.

I guess it's safer this way. Kind of like buying that one card that would make your Magic or Star Wars deck uber from your local comic shop. I bought the Executor for 10 bucks back in the day.

Eveyone just shut up a black market will be selling this crap anyway blizzard just made it so we dont get hacked and spammed by gold farmers it makes the game better. And make sure the developers get that money not a bunch of shady characters that makes prisoners play their game all day long to farm gold to be sold in china.

The idiotic remarks people are making about this update, on this website mostly, are incredible!

    1) Auctions are separated based on region (US sells/buys to/from guess who, US!)
    2) Hardcore mode will not allow purchasing items via RL money (Waaaa little kid bought all his loot and owns me [Why are you playing on pansy mode where that is allowed?]).
    3) Even in pansy mode, you are NOT FORCED TO USE RL MONEY AUCTION! You can still choose the in-game money auction (to the people saying things relating to "OMG BLIZZ IS SO GREEDY I HAVE TO BUY ALL MY STUFF WITH RL MONEY")
    4) Constant internet connection requirement...... What are you playing D3 on, your laptop while your mother drives you to school, and you leech random wifi hotspots???
    5) You people make me sick, idiots.
