The Diablo 3 auction house feature is going to introduce real money transactions, and Blizzard is braced for an initial backlash today once everyone gets that news. No longer will players need to quest and loot forever to find the perfect piece of equipment they're looking for as they can now purchase it with in-game gold, or with real-world currency. Additionally, you'll be able to auction off your hard-earned loot at any moment, and you can convert the gold you make from that into a Blizzard e-balance, or even into real cash. That's right, say hello to Blizzard-supported gold farming.
We imagine that you'll probably have a few questions about this, so keep reading to find out everything that we know so far. While we were able to play our way through the full beta, that experience did not include the auction house as part of the built. But, Blizzard anticipates having a version of the auction house up and running when the beta comes out.
First, of all, if you're sitting there pulling your hair out and drooling, we can understand your frustration. Or if you're out there smiling and already swimming in your virtual currency Scrooge McDuck-style, then you'll also want to pay attention. We're going to give you all of the information about the auction house, and then let you decide how you feel about it.
First of all, why did Blizzard decide to go this way? Obviously trading in Diablo 2 wasn't perfect, and if any of you were around during the days of rampant duping and selling off of materials, you knew that everyone was a multimillionaire. The objects became so commonplace that Stones of Jordan became the new currency, and things devolved from there. Rob Pardo even referenced the fabled "Chat Gem" when talking about how that economy got away from them.
At its heart, Diablo is a loot game. Finding new items are a big part of the experience, and they are extremely random. Unlike World of Warcraft, which uses a deterministic approach to loot drops, Diablo is randomized. A high-level character may drop a rare item, but you have no clue what it will be. It could take you ages to track down something specific, which is why the need to trade things became so popular. It was much easier to find someone willing to trade for that socketed shield you needed, rather than trying to grind for it and hope it would pop up one day.
But despite the need for trading, there were only a few ways to trade in Diablo 2. You could meet up with other players and trade using the in-game trading interface, but it was still often difficult to find specific items. You could post in the forums and chat channels, or use shady third-party websites to try and track down what you needed. eBay was a popular choice as well, but it wasn't the ideal way to find what you needed. Blizzard decided that they want to make this a better experience for players: hence the Diablo 3 Auction House. However, this isn't the auction house that you might have experienced in World of Warcraft.

This time around, you'll be able to buy and sell items with in-game gold as well as real-world currency, and it will be integrated directly into the game client. Right now this is restricted to Items, gold and components that have been put into the auction house by other players, as Blizzard "has no plans" to put items directly into the auction house themselves. But, that doesn't mean that they won't do it eventually. Interested in buying a full-character? Blizzard is considering that as an option right now. Single auction house for each supported currency.
The auction house will have auto-bidding and instant buyout options, and a smart search by class. Players will be anonymous during trades, and there will be both real money and in-game gold auction houses. Hardcore players will not be able to use the real money auction house. There will be listing fees and transaction fees, although Blizzard plans to allow a certain number of "free" listings per account per month, but they'll still take a transaction fee if it sells. You can also choose to send the money you make in the auction house to your Blizzard e-balance and use it in the Blizzard store, or you can choose to send it to a third party payment provider to withdraw real cash, for a percentage. Once you've sent cash to your e-balance, it's locked in there, so you need to be sure what you're doing with that cash after you sell a bunch of items. Basically, the whole feature is like DiabloBay.
Blizzard doesn't want this to be a "Diablo Store," and they're hoping it will facilitate player trading, and they cite several reasons for adding it. They claim it will be great for buyers and sellers, will work well with the design of the Diablo item system, and adds a great deal of depth and fun to the long-term game. According to Pardo, "The auction house in WoW has become its own metagame, we think that will happen here as well."

What do we think about all of this? There will undoubtebly be a huge backlash to this, especially amongst hardcore players who believe that you need to earn your way to a fully-outfitted character. While you'll still have to level up on your own (at least for now), new players will be able to come in and spend their own money to get awesome weapons, armor, and other items. But if that's what they want to spend their money on, then so be it. While there is bound to be a lot of negative reaction to this, it will die down in the weeks and months leading up to the game release, and then upon launch this will end up making a ton of money for Blizzard, and some people will figure out how to work the system for lots of cash.
If you need a primer, go read Cory Doctorow's terrific For The Win, which has players doing this very thing in-game, or check out all the details direct from Blizzard. So what do you think? Are you set to go for the gold in Diablo 3?

I'm working on a Diablo 3 Auction House community forum. It's still in development but it's goal is to allow gamers who want to make a lot of money off of the Auction House do so. The website is http://www.d3ah.org

Again, this is nothing new. People already do this, and I believe it's against ToS. Diablo, WoW, whatever... you can't make money off their games... right now.
Now they are making it so you CAN. Example... when Darkmoon Card: Volcano came out, I had that card almost immediately. Did I grind for it? Shoot no... I contacted my local gold-farm-R-us, purchased gold, and bought it from someone for 20k.
Is that really any different? Now I get to do it without fear of my account getting banned. Blizzard is doing for GEAR/GOLD what California should do with marijuana. Legalize it and tax the bejeezus out of it... make some $$$$. Stop hating and give it a chance.

Its a solo, co op game anyways. Im not planning to play it with randoms. Already have all my friends ready to dungeon crawl.. Pvp is going to be unbalanced and if i can Sell the New Botd to someone who wants to dominate in pvp for a premium who cares. More money for me, doesnt effect me playing the game. Also if people do buy all these op items. Easier to do exp runs. people have lost site of what Diablo is. And if you want to qq about Diablo go buy Grim Dawn or Torchlight 2. There will be lots of options for dungeon crawling, loot finding.

This is nothing new!!! Diablo 2 had items for sale all over the place: eBay, d2items, etc. Blizzard lost a fortune from these third party sites. They decided to eliminate the competition. If they don't do this they lose money and other people do it anyways! Stop pretending people.. this is nothing new.

i would say that this game is off to a bad start,to me it sounds like greed, nothing but utter greed, sortof like what team fortress "free' these days is becoming but 100x worse.
If this game expects me to be logged in ALL the time to play it,they can expect me to download their game off torrent sharing.!!
Come on, i didn't play diablo to play others for split screen & i don't care to auctions, YES i'd like COOP but if it is @ the price of needing a 24/7 connection>>>SCREW U blizzard..........I WILL REBEL !!!!

Half of the posts about WoW because diablo 3 will use WoW mechanics in most of areas. It is really normal because WoW includes most of the best choices which should be in a MMO. So diablo 3 is not a just singleplayer game anymore, then why don't use WoW mechanics?
D_Hubbard_OH
Ok now am I reading this wrong or what. But everything in the article says "Diablo" so why are half the posts about WoW. Just because they put a system into one game doesn't mean it will be in every game they make.
weirdness
It's funny how mad people get over something so simple. No one's forcing you to use this function of the game, it's for those that want to play the game but don't want to spend 100 hours finding one ring. I think it's great, but I won't be using the real currency, I'm not rich.

This is FAIL!!!! I can see it now, WoW going to a real life exchange rate, like Ebay in a game. They would drop a ton of real funds into a virtual banking scheme that pays them some amount for (at first) a few somewhat needed items within the game, then later when the virtual bank becomes independent and has made it's real world money back, and players are dependent on it, players would have to PAY MORE to do the EXACT SAME THING within the game. Well, that's one way to kill WoW off!! People play games BECAUSE they are NOT REAL! If I wanted to play a fail game with real money I'd play the STOCK EXCHANGE!!!!!

I for one see this a money maker and maybe a time saver for everyone. If they do this right, they can limit the farmers. The article mentioned a certain amount of free transaction, I'm willing to bet that the more you sell the higher the percentage that blizzard will take from you. Example: Transactions 1-10 = free, 10-30 = 10%....100-150=80%. These are, of course hypothetical numbers, but a system like this would limit Farmers from owing the market. The issue I see with limiting or a tier base transactions it price gouging. If I can only sell a certain amount of things per month, I'm going to jack up the price of the items I'm selling.

lol everbody pls stop to yell.. PvP system won't be change, it will be similar to WOW, so you should earn some arena points for pvp gear. You can't buy PvP gear with game gold in WoW(except low item lvl blue ones and they suck). RMT system is good for people who want to earn some real, safe money with playing their favourite game. Of course there will be a lot of farmer slaves etc. but they will be in evey MMO game which blizzard made. Just enjoy with new videos and wait for release. Or go play SWTOR which blaster guys can kill jedis...
SciGama
I hope SWOTOR lays the smackdown on blizzard. So i guess you can just buy your way to complete the game now.

ALSO.... to those of you who think hackers can't take in game or real life money from one region of servers (china) and move it to another region (u.s.) are just plain dumb and have probably had your accounts hacked.... also to think that blizz isn't gonna tax in-game transfers for their own profit is naive at best.... this is horrible......

lol just like DrowNoble said, Torchlight 2 is coming out and it is like old school Diablo, which was fun, cause it was a game, a game that you play and enjoy. Not a game to where people greed over items. This is why I never played WoW. Why keep paying to play a game? That's why I played WoW on a private server after 2 years of WoW retail. This is why I still play Starcraft 1 + Broodwar, cause they were games, and they were FUN. A Game is supposed to be ENTERTAINING, not a contest to whom has the most money. I have a damn good job and i refuse to feed these greedy bas tards my hard worked money. I'll go play something else and they can let (like other people said) the bots come and take over. Diablo 3 has already failed and it hasn't even came out. I wasted 12 years of my life waiting for this game and for what? This stupid garbage? I am 30 years old now, and all I've seen was games become more and more greedy with money. It's bad enough games are $60 and more, but to have to keep paying... yeah, good luck Blizz.
crocodilius
@Hubbard, my issue with WoW is selling "premium" items outside the sub-fee.
That's a huge slap in the face, man.
