Ubisoft Aiming High With New Toronto Studio

Get used to these online pass things, gamers; I think they're here to stay. Ubisoft today announced Uplay Passport, a pass that will keep you from online play unless you redeem the code. Here's how Ubisoft describes their new "service:"

"A new program designed to provide players with access to bonus content, exclusive offers, and online multiplayer play. Uplay Passport is an adjunct to Uplay, an in-game service that offers gamers extra value, including a bevy of rewards and community features, just for playing Ubisoft games."

The Passport will launch with Driver: San Franciscoo. If you want to give your game to a pal when you're done, your pal will have to pay $9.99 for a new code. Driver's multiplayer is pretty amazing, and definitely worth 10 bucks if you happen to acquire a used version of that game.

As for future Ubi games: Expect the Passport. The company says the Uplay Passport program will be included in "many of Ubisoft's popular core games."

I understand why EA and UBI and possibly all future PS3 titles are doing this but I don't understand why some find it acceptable. what else do you buy used and have to go back to manufacture and also pay them, on a separate transaction no less.

When you buy a used car you don't go back GM and pay an extra fee to drive it. same with buying a used house, clothes, or any merchandise from a garage sale.

Basically the retailers want to have a competitive market for these games yet the publishers, even though wanting mass sales, want to keep the price they've come to enjoy, $60. Sadly I believe they're shooting themselves in the foot here. I'm a long time member of the CAG marketplace, over at cheapassgamer.com, and you can find great prices on used games where even adding on this stupid 10 dollar fee you're still paying less than if you bought new on sale, even from Amazon. This also poses the question or shall I say strokes the mind as publishers seem to WANT to kill retail and favor digital distribution, since they get more profit out of the equation.

the truth is we complain but do the math lets say they sell 10 60$copies of a game thats 600$ they made now lets say you trade all 10 of those games to gamestop they buy them from you 24,25$ then they resell yhem for 54.99 but the game companies get nothing they didnt make there money back for making the game. the truth is there should be a law passed were gamestop should fork over a percentage bcuz the gamers are the ones getting screwed over

For one thing, used copies of games are not that much less then a new copy. Usually the difference (as far as I've seen) is about 5 to 10 bucks. So if you buy a new copy you're just paying that extra ten bucks anyway and still getting an online pass and developers STILL make profit off it. Everyone wins. If there's a new copy of the game you want available BUY THAT ONE. Unless you're so afraid of not liking it, that not being able to return it makes you want the used copy. If that's the case the rent the game first. You guys need to quit bashing on developers so much though for putting protection systems in games like this. Think about how much money hasn't gone to them from all the used games that have been bought. These people work their tails off day and night to make their games great so they deserve at least some sort of profit. They have to make a living too you know.

You people realize all these arguments about the publishers "losing profits" on the sale of used games are the exact same arguments publishers make about piracy too.

When I buy a game, I expect the ENTIRE game, I don't want to buy a game, then pay more to play the game. I also don't want to pay an extra 30-40 bucks for everyone in my house to play the game. This is a rip off and a family TAX by these large companies. They are driving down their own fan base and LIMITING access to their own games. I really hope fans start to rebel and show these companies that they are making the WRONG decisions. It doesn't make any sense to alienate your potential customer base and limit access to your product. As a gamer, I feel my gaming days are going to be slowing down. This is a disgrace and no way to show appreciate to those who enjoy your product: those who are more likely to buy products from you again at a future date. These companies are finding ways to hurt themselves, and are actually limiting their own future sales. In a few years the only kind of games on consoles we are going to see are dlc games and games with micro-transactions anyways; the days of the big, fun, exciting games is coming to the end; this proves it. Such a shame!

If you can't afford the game...don't buy it. It's not double dipping if you are paying money to X-Box live and then 10 dollars to who ever made the game. I have been a gamer since "Pong" in the late 70's early 80's. If you don't like spending the money on a new game buy it used from game stop for 30 bucks, and if you like it get the online pass for 10 or so. your still saving 20 dollars. It' not rocket science people. Everyone involved want's to make some money. Come on you all sound like a bunch of whining babies.

I feel that this is wrong mainly the fact that publishers are pretty much doing this to get profit off of used games. To simplify all everyone is saying: Gaming publishers want to get paid for the same copy they distributed twice.
They're just double dipping. They can't get paid from used copies of their products (which shouldn't matter to them anyway cause I feel that once they send copies to a store they should get the profit for the +1 unit they sent out and say this copy is for the consumer to do as they please for they legally acquired our product and forget about it. Not they paid for it but don't want it anymore after finishing it god knows how many times so they get rid of it in a establishment where it can be sold without us getting a profit we should overreact.) then we'll make them buy our products straight off the shelf or they'll pay extra for common features. (Long side not huh? =P)

I can see that they're upset that the distribution of used games cause them to lose out on a customer who could've bought it brand new but I can assure having them pay an extra $10 for online service won't convince them to buy it new. I mean if anything they'll get a used copy for $20 bucks and then buy the online pass for a total of $30. Better then the original price tag of $60 right? If they're that upset about it then go make deals with Gamestop, Gamefly etc and see if you can work out a deal where everyone profits from the sell of used games. I can say from personal experience and from witnessing it that if it wasn't for used copies we wouldn't be so into a video game series. I wasn't into God of War until I bought a used copy for $20. Since that first purchase I became dedicated to the series and ended up buying not only the PS2 originals but the PS3 re-releases and God of War 3 full priced! Hell I'm gonna buy the PSP re-release the day it comes out just as I did the previous titles!

What I'm saying is that used games open up gateways for publishers and developers to gain new customers in a series. If it wasn't for me buying Assasin's Creed used I wouldn't have bought the other Assassin's Creed titles at full price. I mean it took sometime to get the money but it was worth it to me! Publishers need to stop whining and stop digging in customers pockets to go to war with these retailers and work out a damn deal! Eventually customers will get fed up and they'll soon either just say screw this game series and the publisher it came from or just go to buying fully used games. They'll just boycott the game series or the publisher entirely and just go on to where the deals are good, with other publishers and their series. If they go in talks with retailers about profiting from used games then they can actually make more money from that then these online passports!

Plus those with XBOX Live have they're monthly/yearly fees to pay on top of this. Thats more money out of their pocket then anyone else! We already pay to play online so why pay extra for online gaming for a publisher that doesn't provide the service on the console?

Just make a deal and call it a night publishers stop attacking our wallets to go to war with retailers. Soon it will be more problem then solution.

A lot of times I only buy a game because it is used. I feel like some game don't warrant a $60 price tag but are still worth playing if they can't be had for less money. I feel like a lot of other people are in a similar situation either due to how much they want the game or if they just don't have the income to support buying games at retail prices.

I understand where these companies are coming from but I feel as though they are going about the problem in the wrong way.

This to me is ridiculous in the sense that to quickly correct this is to make a contract with used game stores stating that a certain percentage goes back to the gaming company to resale a product of there's.No matter who it helps company, developer or whomever to force the consumer at the end buy something that already paying for a pass (xbox360) is something that doesn't help them but hurt them PlayStation users wouldn't be effected by it.They are at the end just copying a move PlayStation did with geohot try to tell you YOU DON'T OWN WHAT YOU BUY NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU SPEND.Why have a EULA if the company itself doesn't follow it.

Folks, understand that when developers extend this metaphorical finger that it is not meant for us, but for retailers that deal in used games. The whole point of this is that developers want to reduce profit loss from used game sales, which developers do not get a penny of. Ever wonder why the cashier always tells you that you can save (usually around) $5 by buying a used copy? Retail stores make way more selling used games than new ones. Still, it is a shame that once again the consumer is forced to pay, as usual.

Where do you think gaming would be without used game and console sales or letting your friend borrow a game. Far fewer people would be gamers today if it weren't for these aspects of the gaming market. I wouldn't be one. If an overarching change like this continues to permeate, the general gaming populace will decrease.
