Halo fans know that July 7 is Bungie Day, a time when gamers come together to celebrate all things Bungie- and number 7-related. Many have hopes that the studio will finally lift the veil on whatever new IP its been working on, but first you'll have to come to terms with the fact that Bungie's seminal first-person shooter Marathon is now available for free on your iPad.
Oh yes, you read that right. Marathon is free.
The fan-made iPad port of the Mac-only FPS was first revealed earlier this year, the work of one Daniel Blezek. Bungie heard about Mr. Blezek's efforts and decided to back him in a more official capacity.
The port is now complete and posted to Apple's App Store as a free download for your iPad. Those who really want to spend money on it have some options though. A high-res texture pack can be downloaded as a $3.99 in-app purchase. There's also a $0.99 "Master Chief mode" which unlocks an assortment of cheats on the pause menu and allows you to save your game at any time instead of sticking with the established checkpoints.
Go get it! It's a free Bungie game that also happens to be the spiritual predecessor to Halo!
