In a move that will likely inspire Hulk-like expressions of nerdrage from PC gamers all over, DICE has confirmed that there are no plans to release mod tools released for its upcoming Call of Duty killer (they hope), Battlefield 3. The news comes from studio exec Patrick Soderlund, speaking in an interview with the German gaming mag GameStar (via PC Mag).
"If you look at the Frostbite engine, and how complex it is, it’s going to be very difficult for people to mod the game, because of the nature of the set up of levels, of the destruction and all those things… it’s quite tricky," Soderlund said. "So we think it’s going to be too big of a challenge for people to make a mod.”
The only challenge I see here is the one DICE just put in front of its fans, to build their own mod tools and create additional content without any help from the developer. The Frostbite 2.0 engine may be complex, but time and experience has long since taught us all that it's never a good idea to underestimate a dedicated army of nerds.

Wait a minute, though. Not making mod tools available is completely different from preventing mods from being used in the first place. It's the latter stance that would outrage me more. As long as they make it mod-friendly, someone will find a way.

Mods bring an almost second wind to great games. I know that the Galactic Warfare Mod for Call of Duty 4 brought me back.

Dice has an amazing new graphics/physics engine. Is anyone really surprised that they are not releasing mod tools at the start? They may not have any PLANS for mod tools now but that does not mean they wont decide to do it down the road. BF2 is up there with the likes of Elder Scrolls as one of the most moded franchises available. Do you really think Dice wont see the value of community generated content adding years to the life of the game.

What they really mean is that the mod tools are too hard to make.

Who needs MOD's....... They will have this baby polished to a shine before we get it. You will need a newer rig to play this game also. I just built mine. And like the others said. If you don't jack up the game to start no one will need to MOD it. And we hope they just spend that time to make DLC or what not for it.

So in other words, DICE is just too lazy.

To be honest Dice SO well in making there game and listening to there community that mod tools aren't needed. As where CoD developers screw the game up so bad that tools are needed to fix what they broke.

I installed some great mods in some games like fixing the screwed up leveling in Oblivion and graphical mods for Deus Ex, but I'm not too worked up with this news. If DICE includes dedicated servers, 64 player support, jets, ability to go prone, support for Directx 11 as well as the others stuff found in previous Battlefield games, Battlefield 3 will be on its way to beating MW3, mods or no mods.
