Tolkien fiends have had an uneven road when it comes to video games. In a sense, every "high fantasy" RPG is based on Lord of the Rings to a greater or lesser extent, but games directly based on Tolkien have not always been outstanding, and there isn't really one title that captures the unique majesty of JRR's books. But I predict that this is about to change when Lord of the Rings: The War in the North is released. According to Warner Brothers, it will be coming this fall to a PC, PS3 or 360 near you.
Along with the release window, we've got details on LOTR:WITN's special edition, and some retailer-specific incentives, too. There's a sweet picture of the special edition's quiver case as well.
Physical content of the War in the North special edition:
- Ranger of the North Quiver Case
- War in the North art book featuring concept art of key characters in the game, various enemies and beautiful environments in Middle-earth
- Inside Look: The Music of War in the North—content includes: interviews and footage of legendary composer Inon Zur at Abbey Road Studios and the E3 2011 Concert event, along with three tracks from the game soundtrack
Digital content:
- Ranger of the North Avatar for Xbox Live (Xbox 360 sku) – includes the Ranger armor set, helmet, quiver and bow
- War in the North Theme Pack (PS3 sku) – includes War in the North wallpaper, fonts, icons and much more!
- The Lord of the Rings: War in the North video game
All of that can be yours for $129.99.

Here's a breakdown of the specific offers from retailers:
- Amazon: Early access to part two of the War in the North Digital Comic written by Brian Wood, illustrated by Simon Coleby and produced by DC Entertainment. The comic book reveals the back story leading up to The Lord of the Rings: War in the North. Players will also receive the Orc Champion sword for in-game use.
- Best Buy: The Elf Theme Pack, equipped with a mystical Elven sword, armor and helmet, and get access to the Lothlórien Challenge map.
- GameStop: Visit the Citadel of the Stars and the Tower of Stone with the Human Theme Pack equipped with an exclusive human sword, armor and battle attire of the Human Ranger, and get access to the Osgiliath Challenge map.
- Target: Three exclusive tracks from the War in the North soundtrack.
- Toys ‘R’ Us: A Limited edition, signed War in the North poster by Jim Lee, and access to download parts one and two of the War in the North Digital Comic at launch.
- Wal-Mart: The Dwarf Theme Pack which includes an exclusive dwarf sword, armor and helmet.
I'm going with Best Buy, because I'm reppin' Elves, yo! What about you? What version (if any) will you buy?

Wouldn't it be funny if they started including the actual books in these things instead of graphic novels which can be ripped through in about five minutes?

I wonder why out of the big pre-order retaillers Amazon got the short straw on this one. I like to think that Amazon has secured it's spot in the gaming community to warrant it to be able to stand side by side with Gamestop and Best-Buy. Target did get a crappy bonus, but their not the biggest when it comes to pre-orders.

game looks awesome, though I wouldnt spend the extra 70 bucks on it for a cool quiver (as awesome as it looks, which it does look awesome) I am, however at a loss for which one I should buy it from, wal mart or gamestop, just because both are classes that intend to play as.
macross2012
waste of money...
