Star Wars: The Old Republic Game Testing Underway

Star Wars: The Old Republic, the PC exclusive massively multiplayer online role playing game from EA will offer 200 hours of play per class according to an interview from GamesIndustry.biz with EA Games head Frank Gibeau.

When asked about the cost of the game, estimated at $300 million, Gibeau said, "I don't pay much attention to that talk, I get a lot of questions from analysts and press about it. What I try and concentrate on is, is it a good game and is it ready to go? You look at a game that has 200 hours of gameplay for each of the six classes, and that doesn't include the crafting, the raids, the multiplayer. It's vast. It's a gigantic game. And that costs money."

First off, as SW:TOR has eight classes, we expect that Gibeau just misspoke. Second, this quote raises a wide variety of questions as Gibeau didn't exactly specify what 200 hours of gameplay meant. It could be 200 hours of pure storyline, but it could also be 200 hours to reach the level cap. Or it could take around 200 hours completing all of the achievements in the game.

It sounds a bit unrealistic to me, but if it's 200 hours of pure Star Wars storyline per class, then that's really exciting and something that no other MMO is emphasizing as much. However, if it's 200 hours for the story then it would seem to be that SW:TOR is more of a single player game with MMO elements, rather than a full fledged MMO where you're required to play with others.

Regardless, 200 hours is a very long time, are you willing to give that much time up for each of your Star Wars: The Old Republic characters?

There better be 200 hours of unique gameplay per class, or we'll run out of things to do and stop subscribing. I don't want another WoW where the leveling experience is almost identical no matter what race or class you picked. Time to evolve.

Honestly it's pretty easy for an MMO player to sink 200+hrs into a game, we/they are a presistant bunch ;P

It sounds like a lot at first, but even if you were to only play for say.. about 4hrs a day, which is by far below the average playtime for most mmo'ers imo, you'd get roughly 1&1/2 to 2 months worth of gaming.

That actually equals out to be about the norm for most MMO's now, in which a large portion of it's population reach lvl cap before or by the time their free-time expires.

That 200hr mark they are boasting may seem like a lot to them, being their first MMO and all, but the reality of things is that a large portion of their playerbase will burn through that in no time and be left with little else to do, and most importantly not have much reason to continue subbing beyond their free-time.

It is a pitfall basically every new MMO has fallen into, so I hope for their sake they have plans for much more content to come in a timely matter.

will be getting it anyways. if after 200hrs im bored, ill either try a new class or just stop buying it. i love how many addicted MMOers are out there. "200hrs is nothing" "ya but after ive spent 10000 hours per class 5 times each, then what can i do?" "i just wanna be able to wake up play for 22hrs, sleep for 2, wake up and repeat. no gf, no real (non guild) friends, no job or life, just MMO"

i will play this game, i will have my 12hrs of non stop play more then once, i might even be addicted for a while, but even the great and almighty WoW only held me for less then a month. got to lvl 46 and just stopped cold turkey. if this game holds me longer then that, then it is officially better then WoW. and im sure it will because i care about the Star Wars universe more then i do about the WoW universe.

200 hours is a very long time. Let us say you are a dire hard MMO and Star Wars fan. 12 hour days (some days more, some days less - but we will average 12 hours) means within 17 days you have completed all content. Normally you get the first month free, so ... you "finished" the game beore you payed for the first month. Let us double that time, you are within your first month.

Trust me, there are MMO nerds out there that will skip the lowbie content and be done within 2 weeks.

The 200 hours is a week for hardcore players.... is a true statement. I was on Rift alpha. I wrote the devs many reports indicating hte game is too EZMODE and too fast to level. the devs told us, it would take more than 3 months to kill Greenscale. I believe my server got Greenscale within the first month. We were told, that no one would be able to get to rank 6 in pvP before the 3rd month either. I saw Rank 6 pvP players within the first month (and you can not level up PvP ranks until you max level of 50).

The Rift Devs 3 months = 1 month of Hardcore playing. Not every player will want to see every quest or building or collect every nook and cranny in SWTOR. I betcha good money that some people will feel empty and devoid of game play within 2 months... even though there are tons of things they skipped.

Who wants to do 50 lowbie level 10 quests as level 50, for instance?

Problem with MMOs is they want to be the "NEXT" WoW. You know what. There are tons of Hardcore players wanting the Next UO or the next Lineage 2 or the next EvE or the next 9insert hard core game) that the MMO community seemed to have forgotten. WoW proves there is a market for the casual players and Rift shows that there is enough of a market to be very successful and close to WoW.

Let us face it, SWTOR will not be hardcore. Most Bioware games (of late) are EZMODE games. I enjoyed MASS EFFECT 2 and the Dragon Age Origin games (but not a fan of 2). I beleive Bioware will tell a good to great Star Wars story/ However, it will still be EZMODE. The "everyone must win" type of game. the graphics look.... moderate to subpar. The death penality (from what I have been told) is non existant. If you die, you will be inconvienced by traveling a few meters from your rezz spot to your fighting area, more than likely.

Will SWTOR be sucessful? YES. Will it be the next WOW. Probably. Will WoW still live? YES! Will Rift still be a dominate force? Yes! Will I try SWTOR?

I am tired of elves, dwarves, dragons, and fantasy based MMOs. EvE and STO did not pull me in. I am HOPING SWTOR does. I have fears, dont get me wrong. I have played too many BAD MMOs that I am very cautious. I am still looking at guild Wars 2 and SWTOR. I might try both. I may stay with RIFT. Who knows. The one thing that I always said about MMOs is: Why can it not be a game more like Fallout, Eldar Scrolls, and hardcore? Each game of Fallout seems to have more content than most starting MMOs. Why is that? So I am hoping SWTOR and Bioware will have the content to make me overlook the EZMODE.

only this game can break the hold that WoW has on my soul. to bad that having the install disk for this game in the same room as my computer would probably make my computer explode. so this game shall give me the motivation to buy a new one so that i can become one with Star Wars. and have something to do in the cold cold winter. probably wont kill WoW tho. but itll cut it down some at least =D

That is a pretty strange comment from Mr. Gibeau. Now I would assume he's talking about the class-focused story aspect of the game since in every interview that's all you hear them (the Bioware interviewees) talk about. 200 hours is not that unreasonable I think. Most in-depth single player rpgs like Fallout and the upcoming Skyrim promise 300-500 hours of stuff to do, now that's when things get a little overwhelming. I'd love to have the option to do story quests for like a 4 hour stretch and not have to worry about all the other mmo hamster wheels to juggle like raids, instances, and BG's. It's always good to have those things to do but after being called a noob by dicks who insist they can tank with a fury spec it's nice to just run off on your own and just focus on your character's own story.

200 hours doesnt really inspire me to buy the game. Sounds too static and linear. What do you do when you have hit the 200 window? Is there other aspects beyond the grind in raids? Wanted an mmo not a 200 hr single player experience.

Well, first.. the game's R&D cost is not $300 million. That would make it about 3 times more expensive than the most expensive video game ever produced. Realistic estimates top out at $150 million (still ridiculously expensive).

Secondly, the 200 hours of content per character stat has been around for a long, long time. It was part of the information released for the 2010 E3, so this isn't exactly breaking news.

200+ hours of what ? As the author noted that's pretty vague. Same statement can be said about every other MMO.
