Mass Effect may continue after the conclusion of Mass Effect 3.
BioWare's founders, Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka, spoke with Forbes recently about the future of the franchise. "We do have a desire to continue the Mass Effect franchise," said Muzyka, "and we're working on the details, figuring out what the fans want, figuring out the right way."
"Certainly the setting has really resonated with people, the type of aliens in the world, the type of people that inhabit space," Zeschuk said. "Obviously we focus first and foremost on nailing it on this game, and then, you know, the possibilities in the future are very, very broad."
In the past BioWare's Casey Hudson has commented on a Mass Effect MMO "making sense." Once the current trilogy ends with Mass Effect 3, how do you want to see the franchise carry on? Do you even want the series to continue or would you rather it end on a high note?
Mass Effect 3 will be released on the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 on March 6, 2012.

I say do it like 343Industries does it with Halo, keep the franchise alive/support it with books comics shorts and thinks alike.

NO MMO PLEASE.
I'm glad that Bioware is thinking of continuing the franchise, there are so many things
in the ME universe.
Here is my idea, just keep making DLC... I say a 2-3 hour DLC once a year or so that
furthers the ME story would be great.

ill be honest the 2nd mass effect wasnt doing it for me, it didnt have that sense of wonder and grandeur i got from the first, like when i became spector or found something on a planet

I love mass effect I'm probably one of its biggest if not the biggest fan of ALL things Mass Effect I would buy anything mass effect if I could at the time meaning if it wasn't limited or exclusive its HARD to buy those kind of product when ur "poor"

If they were to continue it after 3 they should let you pick any race you want, and each race has a different story.

I don't want a MMO. If I wanted to play a MMO, I'd play Bioware's The Old Republic. After the 3rd game, I'd settle for anything from Mass Effect that wasn't a MMO. RPG, a starfighter game, a FPS, etc.

There are several ideas on this thread that I'm inclined to agree with. Personally, I am not in favor of a Mass Effect MMO. I don't doubt that Bioware has the know-how and overall awesomeness to do a really good job with it as an MMO, but I can barely fathom a Mass Effect game that isn't an RPG. Would I buy it as another genre because I'm that much of a fan? Probably... but I'd really rather not wrap my mind around a completely new iteration of my favorite game title, if it can be helped.
I do agree that ME3 should be the end of Shepard's story. I think the Commander should get some well-deserved, long-term shore leave after finally giving the Reapers a nice, solid, death-dealing boot in the face.
As for a new direction for the series, I don't have any specific ideas per se, although it would be kinda cool to see a prequel, as several others have suggested. However, with the full potential of the Kinect yet to be unlocked, I was wondering how it might be to have a Mass Effect game where the player is a biotic and must actually use his or her own "physical mnemonics" to control biotic combat. I'm not sure how this might be done or if it's even possible (I don't own a Kinect - yet), but it seems to me that it could be really fun if it's done correctly. I was always a bit intrigued by Kaidan's stories about BAat; maybe a game following his (or one of his friends') training and then having to use that training in actual combat for the first time? Something in that vein. But still an RPG, of course.
Anyway, enough rambling. I'll be excited about just about anything Mass Effect related, with the caveat that it absolutely has to be on par with what's already been established :)

There's no way it would be an mmo with TOR coming out...eventually?

A possibility is a prequel, such as the First Contact War with the Turians. You could play some soldier who's worked his/her way up the ranks quickly following the discovery of the Charon Mass Relay, only to find yourself on Shanxi the day the Turians attack. You'd now find yourself in a very populated galaxy, being the "new kids on the block" as it were, where you could either follow the Paragon path, creating the history that leads to Mass Effect 1, or re-write history as a Renegade. It'd be a lot like another Bioware title, SW:KOTOR. I'd play the CRAP outta a game like that :)

It would be nice to build upon some of the lore in the codex. Allot to be explored out there in the ME universe. Probably 99% of it has been untouched in the first two games. This world should not be allowed to die with the release of ME3.

As long as the current trilogy surrounding Shepard and his fight against the reapers is concluded...
In all honestly sometimes things need to end, I'd really like a satisfying ending before a continuation of the series. Although, I really do love the universe BioWare created.

Set it about 100 yrs into the ME future and base it off the general consequences of the ending of ME3- let multi player be an option or make it squad based and allow the other alien species to be an option- considering not all of them hold humans in high regard, this would be a great way to start a new direction for the franchise...

Already knew the universe would be continued, but I still love reading those words. Personally, I don't much fancy an MMO version. I love ME and would hate to miss out on an iteration of it just because I'm not a PC gamer. That said, I don't know how else they could do it besides making the next game another action/rpg. There's just so many stories you can tell can tell when it comes to a universe that's full of different aliens and technology.

i for one would love an MMO, but idk how millions of "Shepards" running around savign the universe would work out....
expl0siv0
Please please please no MMO. I am a console gamer and I love ME and I don't want to miss out on an installment of ME just because it is on PC (much like how I am missing out on the old republic... I want that game!!)
That said, I would like it if they took some time off from the series after ME3. As Dr. Sessler always says: I want some time to miss the series and it kills me to see Bioware coasting off of its old successes and releasing sequel after sequel (especially with the news a month or two ago saying that there is more Dragon Age on the way)

Mass Effect is my favorite game series ever so I definitely want to see it continue....
But; I sure as hell don't want it turning into a damned MMO. Its bad enough that KOTOR is getting squandered if Mass Effect goes the same way I will be beyond pissed.
As to how I would like to see the series continue....
I'd like to see another single player RPG trilogy following a new protagonist. Ideally I'd set it about 50 years after the events of Mass Effect 3 so that things will have normalized enough that Shepard's choices won't result in a plague of continuity errors.

Personally I probably wouldnt Mind it to be a MMO if it was set up like Phantasy Star Online and billion times better executed. However seeing that they need to focus on SWtoR, Then I can see them going with one of two options. The first being a a Hybrid between Halo & Bioshock 1. A Four Player 1st Person Shooter, with all the guns blazing and use the Biotics similar to how Bioshock used their similar abilities, with 4 Player Co-op like Halo was. I think that could work greatly for the franchise. If not that then Id suggest a 3rd Person shooter version of Bordelands, except with an enrich storyline. Its four Players. Has a Power skill tree that can work great for ME, and make it Open world'ish Maybe??? Just one thing they need to reassure us of... if they feel like they need to let someone else take over, please dont let it be Obsidian again.
InnerRise
This isn't news.
We already knew the franchise was going to continue in some new form.
They already said this.
Sigh.

A game about the First Contact War maybe? Or would that be a bit too reduced to our solar system since we're used to jumping around the galaxy.
