City of Heroes will be free to play after rebranding itself as City of Heroes Freedom, according to news from NCsoft and Paragon Studios. After the unspecified date of change, players will be separated into regular and "VIP" members. Regular members don't pay subscription, VIP members do.
Executive Producer Brian Clayton at Paragon Studios said that, "To do this, we’ve looked at City of Heroes from the ground up and focused on three ways to enhance the experience by giving our players more choices, greater rewards and the best content we've ever produced."--Read More--

The launch of Freedom will come alongside Issue 21 of the game's updates, which will also introduce a new co-op zone, costumes, power set, and enhanced character creator.Freedom will also introduce the Paragon Rewards program, which allows loyal users to purchase new power sets, costumes and more with points as opposed to actual cash.
"Through City of Heroes Freedom, we will be delivering more content to players than ever before, while continuing to expand the ever-evolving City of Heroes storyline and legacy," Clayton said.
Not a bad deal at all, especially if you've got an MMO itch to scratch or for whatever reason never got around to trying out the ambitious super powered hero sim. Yeah, those both describe me, but I'm sure once Freedom rolls around I'll boot it up. How about you?

F2P is the way to go. Many companies have gone that route and come to have learn that they can make some good bucks that way.

This is fantastic. I figured that once they tried F2P with Champions and how it was received that CoH wouldn't be far behind. I'm so ready to get back into playing I'm already downloading and installing it, even though it'll probably be a year before it goes F2P.
