Nintendo's Wii U announcement didn't pressure Sony to work on the PS4 according to SCEA's Jack Tretton. "If you're looking at high def gaming, that was 2006 for us," said Tretton.
The Wii U's technology wasn't an indicator of the changing times. "I didn't see anything about Nintendo's announcement that said 'Oh, we'd better get working on rolling out a new PlayStation here pretty soon," Tretton said.
It doesn't look like Sony will announce a new console (called the PlayStation 4, perhaps?) any time soon either. "PlayStation 3 is really just hitting its stride. And technologically, I don't think it's possible to provide any advancement beyond what we have," he said.
He went on to add that "the competition" is adding features the PS3 already has. With the PS3 going strong, the PS2 still selling big numbers and the launch of the PSVita later this year, we may not see the PS4 for years.
Do you think it's true that consoles have reached a graphical plateau? If graphics are at their best for what the current technology is capable of, what other features could be added to a new console? When can I have the holodeck?
