MMO games have flooded G4! I'm drowning under a SWTOR preview, a TERA interview video, and a WoW: Cataclysm patch 4.2 "Rage of the Firelands" trailer! And don't forget it was just a couple weeks ago we learned about Dust 514, the ambitious FPS that will connect to hugely-successful EVE Online, not to mention our eager anticipation of Guild Wars 2. All this has made a few co-workers and I wonder just what we'll be doing with our lives in the upcoming months, because it certainly won't be anything productive. I'm already starting to lose sleep since discovering and following the Star Wars Galaxies emulator project.
So we've started thinking about what routes our characters will take, what we'll be spending our in-game credits on, as well as brainstorming some truly awesome guild names. ("The Justice Friends" is my personal submission, as an ode to the fantastical group from Dexter's Laboratory.) What's more amazing though is the variety we've found in each other's playstyles. We've got hardcore raiders, dedicated farmers, party-hardy players and lone wolves. Heck, we've even got people who just log on to sit and exist within the worlds these development teams have created.
Basically what I'm saying is we've got variety, the spice of life, in spades.
But it makes me curious: How do you play your MMOs? Do you play at all? Got any interesting/horror stories from your adventures? Preferably ones that are safe for work? I can't even begin to tell you about the things I did for epic lootz...

I've played a few MMOs. Started with Everquest years ago, gave up MMOs, then started playing WoW about 2 years ago. I have quit since then, but I do have an epic story from when I still played. My guild had been working on a Lich King kill for about 3 weeks (Two raid nights a week) but on the night in question we had pugged our 10th, a dps DK.
Luck was with us that night, we made it through phase 1 unscathed, and during phase 2 the valks kept picking up our warlock(who raided the entire night with her three week old baby in her lap and STILL did awesome damage), who promptly warped back up to the platform. Then we hit phase 3, lost two of our dps'ers to the ghosts, but we were still hanging on. The pugged DK gets pulled into Frostmourne and fails hard, enraging LK who then two shots our main tank. I blow my revive to bring him back in the game, but before he could get aggro LK ends up taking out our OT. We're at 20%, I'm doing about 60% of the healing (resto druids were really OP) with our priest and a shaman handling the other heals. We lose our priest, then I get pulled into Frostmourne. I start yelling encouragement at our shaman (She was a sweet girl, but barely pulling her weight in the heals department, her husband was our OT so she raided) that it was all on her, pop all cooldowns and give 'em hell. 15%, the dead raiders were counting down for us. I go OOM inside Frostmourne, then our shaman calls out she's OOM and I think that we're done for, but before I made it out LK was down, vent erupted in screams, we had finally done it.
TL;DR: On my guild's first LK kill our shaman, who wasn't great at healing, carried the last 10% of the fight healing completely alone. The little shaman that could FTW.

Lately i have being playing AION, Champions Online FTP. I also tried Age of Conan FTP, but i must say, im patiently waiting for GW2. I played 1 and i was pretty much and still am a loner. I have gotten to a few guilds but they are just a pain. Some have stupid rules, others if your are not in a raid when needed you get booted. I for one, if i calculate my time playing video games is like 5-10hours a week if so. So getting in a guild is useless for me.

Love MMOs, and right now i am in a bit of nostalgia with EQ1.
My guild in WoW got to wrapped up in drama so I have decided to take a break from that and dive back into the Evercrack world.
I usually play very causal and I like melee fighters and tanking is very fun. I am usually drawn to the sense of wonder to these games. With alot of playspace available their is alot to explore and that is very fun for me as well.
Do i expect great things from the new games? kind of but i really don't see them breaking the mold all that much. I like the idea of a political system in Terra but i can see how that could be abused by the hard core players to keep the causal ones down.
I expect to give SWTOR a spin but i am not sure if i will stick around quite yet.

As far as MMO's go...well...any game really--I'm in it for the loot. That exclusive bit of armor with pieces scattered through the whole of the game world, that gag weapon that transforms anything it touches into a jack-o-lope, the ring that generates a constant aura of black energy about my character granting no more than a change in aesthetics.
It doesn't matter if the game is single player, co-op, or MMO; I play to improve my figurative, and never full, walk-in closet of gear.
I simply can't wait to get into Guld Wars 2 and get my mits on some of those tantalizing new Greens!

I've got a guild mate up in Canada who I visit from time to time. Its a relatively short drive for us to hang out, but we have to cross the border to do so. Three times the border guard have harassed us about the nature of our trip. They say things like "we just don't understand why you would drive all this way just to meet a friend. How did you meet?"
At this point we mention that we play MMO's, and all of the sudden they laugh and wave us through at top speed. This has happened all three times, and they always ask what game we play.
The U.S./Canada border patrol....GAMERS??

When I played a MMO it was by far the best social gaming experience I have ever had. My guild was fun, mature and active enough to make me want to come play it all the time.
This is what I'm hoping SWTOR will have
